Race to get every Brit online by 2012

Today most of us are computer savvy and consider surfing the ‘net’ an integral part of our life no matter how rudimentary our online skills.

Although it’s hard to imagine life without, there are two schools of thought; on one hand promoting solitary online pursuits, but on the other providing a means to keep in touch with friends or make new ones, book holidays or even find a job. Plus it’s estimated that by paying bills online can save around a whopping £560 per year! Unfortunately there are 10 million people in the UK without access to a computer or the internet who are not only missing out online, many are also disadvantaged in other ways through illness, age, disability and even lack of support.

Several European countries already provide their citizens with free internet access and Finland is the latest to pledge free broadband for all.  The UK government hasn’t gone down this route yet, but it has thrown its support behind ‘Race Online 2012’ an initiative recently launched by the non-profit organisation ‘Digital Inclusion’, in a bid to get at least 4 million plugged in and online by 2012. In order to do this they need private individuals, businesses and charities to donate time and money.
