Baby Boomers get a Taste for Travel
Over 50s, 60s or 70s could be forgiven for thinking that they have ceased to be important in the marketing man’s grand scheme of things, unless you count being bombarded by uninspiring adverts for stair lifts, hearing aids or the dreaded ‘big slipper’. It’s a common misconception that upon reaching retirement age all appetites for activity and adventure suddenly disappear.
This is also true with regards to travel. Older people may more be more reticent when it comes to strenuous physical holidays and are more diligent when it comes to find the right travel insurance. Over 70s may not want to spending every waking moment mountaineering, snowboarding or bungee jumping, but who says they don’t want a bit more fun and excitement.
There is no need for older holiday makers to blend into the background around a pool with a good book (unless they want to!) or to sip endless cups of tea albeit in charming surroundings. Just because they may not want to test their levels of endurance it doesn’t mean all bets are off. There are plenty of holidays which fall into the ‘middle ground’, that offer nothing more strenuous than gentle exploration, wine tasting or cookery master classes, a great way to learn a new skill whilst indulging in a spot of fine dining.
On the top of most gastronomes and wine buffs destination wish list is France, who hasn’t heard of Chablis, Côtes du Rhône, Burgundy, Bordeaux and of course Champagne. Every region seems awash with famous vineyards and restaurants, so unless completely averse to crossing the Channel, France is the obvious first port of call (literally!) This type of holiday is available all over the world; USA, South Africa, London, Spain, Italy and Crete. Most travel agents offer packages plus there are seemingly an endless list of websites each providing information and ideas.
For those who find the learning just a little too energetic there is always the prospect of heading to the nearest restaurant to sample the local delicacies before heading off the pool with a good book!
