Low cost London best for Christmas shopping

Saving money isn’t the first thing to spring to mind when we think of shopping in the capital, most of us are tempted by the choice of shops, variety of goods and also the grandeur of the surroundings, not for cheap prices. The same applies when considering shopping trips Paris, New York, Rome or indeed any other major capital city – although often cheaper than London it’s the experience that makes up for the often high price tags.

According to the Price Runner International Price Comparison report based on prices across thirty-three countries Oslo is currently the most expensive with Paris in fourth place, whilst surprising New York is fourth cheapest but is beaten by Mumbai which boasts the lowest prices.

However, there has been a shift in the nature order and London is now viewed as one of the best value for money destinations for city breaks and shopping, making a trip to the capital much more enticing than hoping on a plane to visit its European counterparts. In 2007 London was the most expensive city in the world yet today ranks as the twentieth due to retailers slashing prices and Sterling’s parity with the Euro. London prices are now even lower than Lisbon, Istanbul and Moscow.

Currently hotel chains such as Premier Inns are advertising incredibly cheap prices in the capital, but it’s not just the budget hotel chains that are offering reduced rates and discounts can also be found on various websites offering huge savings on some the most prestigious establishments. Getting there won’t be a problem either, although train fares aren’t particularly cheap at the moment there are plenty of low cost local and national daily coach services to London. It’s worth remembering that most transport companies prefer you to take out travel insurance, which isn’t such a bad idea when you consider that Staysure travel insurance policies can cover you for cancellation, theft, loss of baggage, cash and much more.

A spokes person for VisitBritain (the UK’s official tourism and travel guide) said; ‘This confirms Britain as a value for money destination especially in the run up to Christmas’. London (and indeed Britain) is one of the world’s most popular destinations but it’s vital that potential visitors are aware not only of what’s on offer but also the current great exchange rate. It’s official. London really does offer more for your money.
