Why should I compare and switch my energy supplier?

If you have been with the same supplier for many years it is likely that you will be on a standard, default tariff. The Department of Energy and Climate Change estimates that 9.5 million households can save over £300 by switching to a better deal.

Saving money is not the only potential benefit! Energyhelpline can also help people find more flexible tariffs that allow them to change suppliers without getting penalised or search for a more environmentally friendly gas and electricity source.

Frequently asked question about switching energy supplier

  • How are comparisons calculated?

Comparison calculators take into account a number of factors including where you live, your current energy usage, how much you pay, your payment method and what type of tariff you’d like. The information provided is then used to compare your service with the tariff details for licensed UK suppliers available in your area to see who can offer you the best deal.
  • How long does it take?

You can compare energy prices and begin to switch suppliers online in a matter of minutes. Once you’ve confirmed you’d like to switch, you will receive a letter from your new energy company then within 6 – 8 weeks, the switch process will be complete and you’ll start to receive bills from your new supplier.
  • When can I change supplier?

You are free to change energy supplier whenever you like. Some suppliers impose exit penalties so it is worth checking with your current company before switching.
  • Will my gas or electricity supply be interrupted?

No, your new supplier will contact your existing energy provider to arrange a smooth transfer. The only change you will see is that your bill will come from a new supplier.
  • Should I stop my Direct Debit with my current supplier?

You should not cancel your Direct Debit until the transfer of your supply has been confirmed.
  • Can I still switch if I owe money to my supplier?

If you owe money to your current energy company you may be unable to switch until you have paid off any debts. There are certain cases in which you will still be able to switch which are explained on the Citizens Advice website.
  • What information will I need to provide?

To compare tariffs you need to provide your postcode, current energy supplier and how much gas and electricity you use.

To switch supplier, your name, address, contact information, an up-to-date meter reading and bank details (if you want to pay by direct debit) are required.
