Can I go on holiday after gallbladder removal? Can I fly?
Normally patients are back to normal in a couple of weeks after having a gallbladder removal. But, you should get your doctor’s opinion that you’re fit to go.
Why do I need travel insurance to cover my gallbladder removal?
Covering your gallbladder removal with insurance means if something related goes wrong, that you’re covered.
If you haven’t yet been fully signed off from post-surgery, we can still offer you cover. But in this case, your cover wouldn’t include medical expenses for anything caused by your gallbladder removal.
Medical costs can mount up, especially if you are travelling outside the European Economic Area. Things of a non-medical nature can go wrong too: flight delays, holiday cancellations, loss of personal belongings.
So it’s worth asking if you want run the unnecessary risk of travelling without insurance.
You might be surprised to know how often it is necessary to make use of your insurance: 1 in 20 people made claims on their Annual Travel Insurance in 2017*.
What does getting my quote for gallbladder removal travel insurance involve?
We’ll ask you about your holiday dates, your age, any additional cover options you might want, and we’ll also need you to complete a medical screening. It’s easy to complete and then you’re set!
What is a medical screening?
This involves us asking you a few questions about your gallbladder removal. We’ll also ask you about any other pre-existing medical conditions you have.
The process doesn’t take long and is easy to follow. It’s a good idea to have details of your medical condition to hand during the screening.
It’s really important at this stage that you give us full and accurate information about your medical history.
Common questions we may ask you include:
• Are you awaiting any further investigations or treatment for biliary stones?
• How long ago was your last procedure to the gallbladder?
Will a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) cover my gallbladder removal?
If you’re going on holiday or taking a trip in most parts of Europe, then carrying an EHIC with you is a condition of our insurance.
An EHIC means you are eligible to subsidised or free healthcare in most European countries when you use their state healthcare provider (like our NHS). It covers all EEA countries (that’s all EU members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).
Please note, though: even inside the EEA,there are a few places such Monaco and Jersey, that do not accept EHIC.
If you do use your EHIC and you’ve still had to pay a subsidised fee for healthcare, we’ll remove the excess fee for medical emergency claims.
All the above said, an EHIC will not cover you for non-medical issues that go wrong. If you have to cancel your holiday, or if you have to pay for medical transportation home, EHIC will not cover it. So while we require you to take it along with you, an EHIC is no substitute for a proper travel insurance policy.
Types of travel insurance policies we offer
We offer two types of policy to suit you and your family’s travel plans:
Single Trip Travel Insurance is perfect if you’re taking a one-off holiday. From a UK seaside-break to a grand tour of the world, you’ll be covered with our Single Trip policy.
Annual Travel Insurance may be a better choice if you’re planning on taking a number of separate trips in one year – it can as many as you like in that time as long as you don’t spend more than half the year away from home.
Whatever your travel plans, and whatever your medical conditions, all of our policies can be tailored so that they fit you perfectly.
Fancy an even longer trip?
What if the two above policies still aren’t enough for your plans? That’s no problem – you can choose one of our long stay policies. For under 65s, our long stay plan means you can you travel for up to 18 months – plenty of cover for a whole range variety of jaunts.
What does our travel insurance cover?
What happens if I need medical treatment while abroad?
That’s not a problem. You can call our emergency line 24 hours a day – so it doesn’t matter which side of the world you’re on. We’ll help to arrange non-urgent medical treatment with local doctors. We’ll even provide translation if you need it. (You can even reverse the charges when you call us.)
If your medical bill comes to more than £350, we’ll even try to settle it directly with the medical facility.
Be covered properly with your tailored policy
A competitive price always matters, and we’ll always offer you that. So if basic level insurance suits you down to the ground, then that’s fine.
But what if you want more cover? In that case, you might want to consider tailoring your policy to increase your cover where it’s needed.
Or, if you’re after even greater peace of mind, you can always choose our comprehensive level insurance. It’s got pretty much all the features you could wish for to cover holiday eventualities, and at your desired level of cover. It’s been rated as 5 star by Defaqto.
What if you’re thinking of something extra-special? Swinging those clubs on a golfing tour? Gliding along on an Aegean cruise? Yes, you can be covered for those too. With Comprehensive cover, you can also upgrade to a higher level of cover for these and other activities.
However you want it, a Staysure tailored policy can cover it.

I’ve already bought my policy – can I still make changes to it?
We do need you to tell us of any changes in your medical or travel situation, so that you go with a properly valid policy. It’s always worth getting this bit right, to avoid disappointment later.
So whether you’re updating us on your medical conditions or medication, or adding optional extras to your holiday, please speak to us and we’ll do our best to see if we can increase the coverage where necessary.
While we can increase your policy coverage, we can’t reduce coverage in return for a partial refund. So do check that you’re happy with the level of cover when you buy your policy.
You can upgrade your cover at any time as long as you haven’t travelled or claimed yet.
If I fall ill before travelling, am I covered by Staysure?
Yes, on the following conditions. You will need to have declared your gallbladder removal plus any other pre-existing medical conditions during the medical screen when you bought your policy, and your doctor must have passed you as medically fit to travel at the time.
If you then find yourself in a medical emergency which stops you from travelling, and your doctor declares you are now unfit to travel, you will be able to claim for having to cancel your holiday.
