Tourist Visas

British passport holders who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for a double entry e-Tourist Visa (e-TV) to enter India at certain designated airports. More information about the eligibility criteria is available on the government of India’s e-Tourist Visa website.

As of 1 April 2017, the length of stay on an e-visa is 60 days, increasing from 30 days.

Vaccinations for India from the UK

Along with getting travel insurance to cover you for emergency evacuation if necessary, vaccinations are also a vital part of your holiday planning.

It is recommended that you consult your doctor at least six to eight weeks before you travel and he/she will assess your particular health risks to recommend any vaccines you may need to take.

Currency

  • The local currency is the Indian rupee (Rs) which is divided up into paise coins. It is easy to change US dollars, UK pounds and Euros at banks throughout India. If you are changing currency or traveller’s cheques, remember to bring your passport with you.
  • You can withdraw money for ATMs linking to international banking networks from most towns but be sure to carry cash with you should there be a power cut, you lose/break your credit/debit card or lose your traveller’s cheques. The most commonly accepted cards are Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus, Maestro and Plus, while Thomas Cook traveller’s cheques are the most widely accepted in India, with charges for changing them varying from place to place.
  • Bank charges can be high for international transactions so make sure you keep them to a minimum by drawing out reasonably large sums at a time.
  • Credit cards are often accepted in most outlets, including upmarket restaurants, train stations, shops and many good hotels. You can also use them to get cash advances at some banks where they don’t have an ATM.
  • Money changers are common in India and can often give you a decent rate so their rates are well worth comparing with bank rates. Money changers can often be found in hotels, travel agents and Internet cafés.
