Tips for travelling with anxiety

Anxiety can foster feelings of insecurity when you’re away from your home environment and keep you from travelling. There are however, some steps that you can take to manage the symptoms of your anxiety to allow you to enjoy a trip to the full:

  • If you’re seeing a doctor or therapist about your anxiety, ask their advice before booking a trip
  • Be prepared: remove the stress from your travels by pre-planning your entire journey in detail
  • In the weeks coming up to your travels, practice some coping mechanisms, such as deep-breathing or other relaxation techniques to help you deal with a possible anxiety attack
  • If you have a panic attack, try not to fight the symptoms but allow them to run their course instead, as resistance could only make matters worse. They should heighten for a minute or two and then taper off gradually
  • Create distractions – bring a good book or magazine along on your travels to take your mind off your symptoms
  • Bring a travel buddy with you such as a trusted friend or family member whom you feel comfortable with along on your travels. They may be able to help ease panic attacks or make you feel more secure travelling
  • If you are taking any medication for your anxiety, make sure to bring enough to last you your whole trip, and some extra in case you are delayed.
