Why do I need Diabetes Travel Insurance?

Having adequate travel insurance on your holiday is essential, especially if you suffer from a chronic illness such as diabetes. Obtaining travel insurance that does not fully cover your medical conditions may result in your claim being rejected, therefore it is always in your best interest to fully disclose any medical conditions when taking out a policy.

Travelling with Insulin

If you suffer from insulin-dependent diabetes (commonly called Type 1 diabetes), there are some things that you will need to take into consideration regarding your holiday. For example, in the UK we use insulin strength U-100, as do many other countries. However, in some countries the insulin strength may be U-40 or U-80 and there are different syringes for different strengths. As it is not safe to interchange these syringes, it's important to use the relevant syringes depending on insulin strength. Additionally, as it is never good to freeze insulin, when travelling by air insulin should always be carried in your hand luggage.

* Type 2 diabetes covered free of charge, must be controlled by diet alone or by no more than one type of medication (no insulin), must not have had diabetec complications or related hospital treatments and must have been a non-smoker for at least 12 months.

**Please see our terms and conditions for a full list of the pre-existing medical conditions included. Type 2 diabetes is only covered free of charge subject to the above criteria. Please note this does not include any costs of medical screening.
