In honour of the Man Booker Prize we decided to give away a £25 Amazon gift voucher for our October competition, so customers could treat themselves to some fabulous new books.
All they had to do was tell us about a book that was important to them to get their hands on the voucher. We had scores of messages on our Facebook page, but Pat Grant was the winner, after choosing Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian.
She said: “I read this as an adult many years back, it brought me to tears. I read it to my girls, who in turn will be reading it to their children. Highly, highly recommended.”
After hearing that she had won our competition, Pat added: “I’m delighted to have won a £25 Amazon gift voucher, thank-you sooooo much!”
Some of our other favourite entries included Natalie Christie, who chose The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald.
She said: “I fell in love with this book because it is short and easy to read –and so easy to escape into the lives of the characters in their time of The Roaring Twenties of New York. You start reading and feel comfortable in Nick Carraway’s conversational tone, and you trust him as a narrator, seeing and sharing events and people through his eyes. Everyone sees Gatsby as different, a fool, a crook, an idealist who values his love-affair with Daisy above his own life. But it is the “magic” of reading about the era, action, people and music, which mix and intermingle through every reading to be different and intoxicating into a heady, but pleasant cocktail of its time.”
Sandra Dudley opted for Before I Go to Sleep by S. J. Watson. “It keeps you on the edge of your seat,” she explained. While Sandra McKeen likes Game of Thrones by George Martin. She said: “Every bit as good as the TV series. It had me on the edge of my seat and I had to have all the books in the series. I wouldn’t part with any of them for all the gold of the Lannisters.” On the other hand, Janet Fisher is a big fan of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. She commented: “Love the way people respected themselves and the ladies get the upper hand.”
We were pleased to have so many entries so well done to everyone and congratulations Pat – we hope you get some new favourites with your voucher!
