While exploring all that Europe has to offer, it’s important to protect yourself from unexpected mishaps. Although it’s not a legal requirement, 29% of people having made at least one claim on their travel insurance*, so it can be a lifeline when something does go wrong.

Take out holiday insurance for Europe as soon as you book your trip and you’ll be covered for:

✔   Cancelling or cutting your holiday short
✔   Medical repatriation
✔   Travel disruptions and delays
✔   Lost or damaged baggage
✔   Lost or stolen cash

You’ll need to let us know about any pre-existing medical conditions you have when you take out your policy. This way, you’ll be covered in case of any medical emergencies related to that condition – and you can rest assured knowing your policy is tailored just for you.

What type of insurance policy do I need for Europe?

There are two different types of policy to choose from for your European holiday.

Single Trip Travel Insurance is ideal if you’re going on a one-off holiday.

Annual Travel Insurance may be a better fit if you’re planning on taking more than one holiday in a year. There are five different levels of regional cover you can choose in total, with two you can choose for Europe.

It’s really important that you choose the right region to cover your holiday destinations. Find out more in our explainer to Single Trip vs Annual Multi-trip Insurance

Before you travel you should also check that The Foreign Office (FCDO) say it’s safe to travel to your destination, and any government advice, safety guidelines, and entry requirements.

Staysure to the rescue in Cologne

Last year my husband was taken into hospital on the morning we should have come home from Germany. This resulted in a 12 day stay in Cologne. Everything was arranged for us [by Staysure], an ambulance picked us up from the hotel and an ambulance was waiting for us at the airport when we reached England and brought us home. Submitting paperwork to claim back our medical expenses and hotel costs was very easy and Staysure paid everything without question.

What’s not covered?

Holiday insurance is like a safety net for those unexpected moments on your trip. But, it’s important to keep in mind that not everything is covered.

Understand more about what you’re covered for, and what you’re not, in our guide to what travel insurance covers

Your Staysure European Travel Insurance policy won’t cover these types of claims:

  •   Incidents involving alcohol or controlled substances
  •    Choosing not to go on a trip
  •   A pre-existing medical condition you haven’t told us about
  •    Strike action that was known about when you booked your trip

What countries are included in Europe travel insurance?

Our holiday insurance covers travel to all countries in Europe, plus some neighbouring countries too.

While Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia aren’t in Europe, they are covered on a European annual policy.

And if you’ve got grand plans to see more of the world, our worldwide travel insurance could be just the ticket.

Add optional policy extras to your travel insurance quote

Whether you’re skiing in the Alps or teeing off on a golf trip in Spain, add extra cover where you need it. All add-ons are available on both Single Trip and Annual policies. Some extras aren’t available when you choose a Basic policy, while others might be included as standard on a Signature policy.

Hit the road and explore to your heart’s content! Be confident that any accidents or damage to your hire car can be covered up to £4,000. It can be added to any policy.

Lucky enough to be travelling for more than 50 days? If you’re 70 or under, you can upgrade your policy cover before you travel, for up to 100 consecutive days of travelling in one trip. It’s available on Comprehensive and Signature policies only.

Off on a cruise holiday? Cruise Plus Cover protects you against things like not being able to dock at a scheduled port due to bad weather, and cabin confinement. It’s available on Comprehensive and Signature policies. Find out more about our different levels of Cruise cover.

If you’re going to be taking expensive tech away with you, like a laptop, smartwatch or smartphone, Gadget Cover can protect an unlimited number of your devices for up to £2,000. This cover includes protection against accidental loss or theft, damage from accidents or malicious intent, liquid damage, and unauthorised call, text or data usage. It’s available on Comprehensive policies as an add-on, but included on Signature policies as standard. Learn more about Gadget Cover.

If you need to make a claim, having an excess waiver means you won’t have to pay out from your own pocket. This can’t be added retrospectively and does not apply to Terrorism Cancellation, Car Hire Excess Waiver or Gadget cover. It’s available on Comprehensive policies as an add-on, but included on Signature policies as standard.

Cover for cancelling or cutting your holiday short if the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) advises against all, or all but essential travel to your destination because of an unforeseen incident such as an earthquake, fire, flood or hurricane. Find out more about our Travel Disruption cover. It can be added to any policy.

Golf insurance covers your golf equipment hire and non-refundable golfing fees. You’ll have hole-in-one cover too – meaning we’ll pay you £300 if you score a hole-in-one during your trip, as long as you’re a member of a recognised golf club affiliated to a national golfing union, you have your scorecard signed by your playing partner and you’re playing at a golf affiliated golf course too. It’s available on Comprehensive and Signature policies when playing non-professionally only.

What our expert says…

“Don't forget your GHIC! With a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) , you'll get discounted or free state healthcare in 27 EU countries, along with Switzerland and Montenegro. Other unexpected costs can come up if something on your trip doesn't go to plan, which is why it's important to have travel insurance too."

Frequently asked questions

How much European travel insurance costs depends on where in Europe you’re travelling to and the level of cover you need.

Discover more about what affects the price of travel insurance in our guide.

Factors that can affect the price of travel insurance to Europe include:

  • Where you’re travelling to
  • How long you’re going for
  • If you have any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Whether you need cover for a one-off trip or several
  • If you choose any policy add-ons

Yes! Don’t let a pre-existing medical condition stop you from travelling to Europe with confidence.

Our online medical screening process is a straightforward set of questions for us to understand how your medical conditions affect you. Or, if you prefer, we can help you to complete the medical screening over the phone.

Take out a policy as soon as you’ve booked your trip – just in case an unexpected twist means you have to cancel your holiday.

Single Trip cover starts right away. You might be able to buy it up to 24 months before you’re due to travel, depending on your age. With an Annual Multi-trip policy, you can select the start date that suits you best. You’ve got a 90-day window to activate your policy from the day you buy.

You still need travel insurance even if you have a GHIC or a valid EHIC.

A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for holiday insurance. These cards won’t cover you for cancellations, loss of baggage, repatriation and other things that a travel insurance policy can.

It’s a condition of our insurance that when you travel to one of the countries covered by the scheme, your GHIC card goes too.

Find out more and how to apply on the NHS GHIC website.
