Following recent travel dramas (notably decathlete Ashley Bryant who had to borrow vaulting poles as his airline lost his before qualification meeting) leading travel insurer Staysure estimated how much it would cost to insure not only Team GB’s athletes, but their specialist equipment as well, as they make their way to the biggest sporting event in the world.
On top of their own flights and transport plans, the athletes will need to ensure the safe transit of items including; bows and arrows, around 10 sets of guns, over 100 tennis and badminton rackets, a least 30 BMX and mountain bikes, dozens of boats, kayaks and canoes, 100 hockey sticks, at least a dozen horse riding saddles, foils, sabres and epees and at least three sets of vaulting poles and javelins.
Chris Rolland, Staysure CEO commented; “For such an important event – our athletes will want absolute peace of mind. Our calculations have reminded us just what an incredible feat of logistics it is to get a team of 360 athletes, not to mention their crew and equipment, on the road to compete 5,761 miles away in Brazil. We wish all of Team GB safe travels and the very best of luck this summer – and hope they are sufficiently covered for a major haul of gold medals!”
The insurance estimate also factors in covering any gold medals the athletes might bring home – individually worth around £460.
The estimate is based on a Comprehensive single trip policy for 360 individual athletes* to visit Rio for three and a half weeks, and also includes ‘valuable item’ add-ons to cover some of the specialist equipment they will be travelling with. The policy would cover all transport delays, baggage delays, cancellation/curtailment up to £5,000, medical emergencies for up to £10 million, baggage cover for up to £2,500, personal liability cover for up to £2 million – should a misplaced pole vault cause an injury – and even legal protection.
