Why do I need travel insurance for leukaemia?

When travelling with any health condition, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. That’s where we come in.

Having proper cover when travelling with leukaemia, or being in remission, will give you the peace of mind that if anything goes wrong when you’re away, you’ve got our support.

Problems on holiday can vary from lost luggage or flight delays to a medical emergency. Having proper travel insurance can minimise the worry, by having a helping hand there if you need it. That, and it could save the strain on your wallet too, with medical treatment abroad working out very costly.

Needing our help when you’re away is not that uncommon, with 1 in 20 people making claims on their travel insurance in 2017*.

In order to offer you cover you we need to make sure it’s safe for you to travel. We need to know that you aren’t travelling against the advice of your doctor, and that you haven’t received a terminal prognosis.

To find out whether we can cover you, we’ll first need you to complete a medical screening.

The screening process is a simple questionnaire designed to know how your conditions affect you. This can be done either online, or over the phone with our friendly team today.

What questions will I be asked about my leukaemia in the medical screening?

We’ll need to know your official diagnosis, which may be one of the following:

  • Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
  • Acute myeloid leukaemia
  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia
  • Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia
  • Chronic lymphocytic (or lymphatic) leukaemia
  • Hairy cell leukaemia
  • Aplastic anaemia
  • NK (natural killer) cell leukaemia
  • Plasma cell leukaemia

Then, the types of questions you can expect include:

  • What type of disease do you (or did you) have?
  • Has bone marrow (or stem cell) transplantation been performed?
  • Have any relapses following treatment occurred?
  • How long ago was the diagnosis made?
  • Are you taking strong painkillers every day for this condition?
  • What does our travel insurance cover?
Basic Comprehensive
  • Medical emergencies and repatriation up to £5m
  • Cancellation and cutting your holiday short covered from £500 with optional upgrade to £3,000
  • Baggage claims up to £300
  • Cash lost or stolen up to £250
  • Excess £85 – £100
  • Unlimited medical emergency and repatriation cover
  • Cancellation and cutting your holiday short covered from £5,000 up to £15,000
  • Baggage loss up to £2,500
  • Cash lost or stolen up to £500

  • Excess £65

What may stop me from getting travel insurance for leukaemia?

Before we can offer you cover, you need to be able to say yes to all of the following:

  • I am not travelling against the advice of my doctor.
  • I am not travelling after receiving a terminal prognosis, having been given a life expectancy by my doctor or medical professional.
  • I am not travelling with the intention of having medical treatment, tests or a consultation abroad.

If you have received a terminal diagnosis, we may be able to cover you depending on your medical circumstances. But, if you’ve received a terminal prognosis (been given a life expectancy by your doctor or medical professional) we cannot offer you cover.

We can signpost you to the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA). They may be able to help in finding you an alternative provider.

We can also signpost you to InsureCancer.com who can also be contacted on 0845 6490190. Insure Cancer specialise in providing cover for people with active, metastatic, relapsed or terminal cancer, as well as people involved in clinical trials.
