UK travel insurance
Holidaying in the UK is on the up thanks to brilliant cities, dramatic coastline and excellent countryside retreats. However, many people still overlook travel insurance when on a ‘staycation’ and could face some significant costs if they don’t have a quality policy in place.
According to Visit Britain, 7.3 million British people holidayed in the UK in the first three months of 2016, an increase of 10% compared to the previous year. Everything from long weekends away, overnight spa trips, weddings and golfing getaways to hen or stag parties can be covered with a quality travel insurance policy.
With an Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, you can cover all your last minute UK trips without the need to plan ahead. Speak to one of our insurance specialists on 0800 033 4902 or get a quote online.
Do you need travel insurance in the UK?
While some ‘staycationers’ may deem insurance unnecessary because any medical treatment they require in the UK will be covered by the NHS, they are forgetting some of the numerous benefits offered by a quality travel insurance policy including coverage for cancellation and curtailment, lost or stolen baggage and personal money as well as travel delays.
Cancellation and curtailment
One of the most common reasons you may need to claim on your insurance is for cancelling or curtailing your holiday. If you can’t go on holiday or it gets cut short due to an unforeseen illness, death or even being called up for Jury Service, you can often claim for unused accommodation, flights, train tickets or pre-paid tickets to amusement parks and other attractions in these circumstances.
Lost or stolen baggage
Our 5-Star Defaqto Rated Comprehensive policies provide up to £2,500 cover for baggage which is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed during a trip. There is also £500 of insurance for your personal money if you’re unfortunate enough to lose it or have it stolen while on your trip.
If the first or final legs of your journey are delayed as a result of public transport breakdowns, problems with air traffic control systems, adverse weather conditions or strikes and industrial action you can claim for travel delays. Up to £1,500 of cover is available with our Comprehensive Travel Insurance.
Surprise medical costs
If you’re holidaying on one of the coastal islands surrounding the UK, travel insurance is often an absolute necessity. If you visit the Channel Islands (including Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Herm and Sark) and need to be flown back to the mainland for medical treatment, insurance can help you avoid a hefty bill as the EHIC is not valid on any of the islands.
Think about extra insurance for activities
If you’re planning on playing a round of golf at Royal County Down or skiing in Glenshee, then it is worth considering optional extras when buying your insurance*.
Golf travel insurance provides up to £1,000 of cover for personal golf equipment, replacement cover up to £300 if your hired equipment is lost, stolen or damaged, £150 with no excess for non-refundable green fees if you’re unable to play and hole in one cover up to £75.
Winter sports coverage offers £500 insurance for winter sports equipment, piste closure cover up to £200 and up to £250 lost or stolen ski-passes.
If you’re the kind of person who likes to travel with plenty of gadgets (your mobile phone and a quality camera for instance) then add-on gadget travel insurance may be worth investing in. The optional extra provides £1,000 of insurance for accidental, liquid and malicious third-party damage as well as cover for unauthorised use such as calls and data use after the item was lost or stolen. Cover can be extended to immediate family members named on an add-on policy.
