Why do I need travel insurance for Italy?

Italy is an unforgettable place but you won’t want to remember it for the wrong reasons.

In 2017, 1 in 20 people had to make claims on their travel insurance**, so mishaps are not uncommon. Often, the solution to these problems can be very costly.

It could be missed flights, cancellations, lost passports and possessions, delays or damage to luggage… What could come with these problems are huge bills.

But with a tailored travel insurance policy you can protect yourself against all these potential problems. You can choose the level of cover that suits you, tailoring it to suit your medical condition and your travel plans.

We think travel insurance is worth doing right. Don’t you?

Should I take an EHIC to Italy?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, our policies require that you do take one. But an EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance.

An EHIC (European Insurance Health Card) holder is entitled to subsidised health care in the state health providers in Italy.

If you have an EHIC we will waive your travel insurance excess if you need to make a medical claim. (This could amount to £100 per person on a Basic policy and £65 for Comprehensive policies.)

But you should be aware that an EHIC does not cover you for non-medical related problems and emergencies on your trip. In fact, it won’t actually cover you for medical repatriation (for instance having to return to the UK in an air ambulance), which can be extremely costly.

That’s why both our NHS and Foreign Office recommend that you buy proper travel insurance as well as taking your EHIC. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Travel insurance for Italy with pre-existing medical conditions

As part of our insurance process, prior to getting your quote you’ll be asked to complete a medical screening. This helps us work out the right cover for you and your medical needs.

How does the medical screening work?

We simply ask you some questions about any medical conditions you have. We use the same system for all our customers and we always treat our customer information confidentially.

If you have a medical condition but haven’t told us about it when you buy your policy, then it would mean you won’t be covered if you have to make a claim. So it’s vital that you provide us complete and accurate information.

To help you during the screening, it’s a good idea to have details of your medical history to hand.

The process is easy to follow and won’t take long at all. You can complete it online or, if you prefer, over the phone.

What if my medical condition changes before I start my trip to Italy?

If your health changes after you’ve bought your policy from us, please call us as soon as possible and let us know.

We’ll assess if you’re covered by the existing policy. It could mean we need to charge you an additional premium. In very rare cases it could mean we are unable to provide cover. We’re used to dealing with such changes, so please do talk to us. We’re here to help.

What if my airline or travel company goes bust before or during my trip?

We’ve heard some concern about this from our customers, which is why we’ve made provision for it.

Fairly recently a number of travel companies and airlines have failed, with holiday makers themselves picking up the pieces.

This is why we’ve introduced an End Supplier Failure to our Comprehensive Travel Insurance policies. It gives you protection of up to £3000 against the insolvency of travel and hotel companies (which do not form part of a package holiday).
