Why do I need travel insurance for Turkey?
It’s not as uncommon as you might think for something to go wrong on holiday. 1 in 20 people made claims on their Annual Travel Insurance in 2017**.
Travelling to Turkey without holiday insurance means that you would have to pay for any emergency costs that might arise.
Turkey has no reciprocal health agreements in place with the UK so you will not be covered by a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This makes arranging adequate cover all the more important.
But with a Staysure policy you can be safely covered for all these things and more. We can’t stop all problems from happening, but we can help smooth many of them over.
When it comes to travel insurance, isn’t it worth doing it right?

Travel insurance to Turkey with pre-existing medical conditions
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, we’ll ask you to complete a medical screen so we can assess how we can cover you on your Turkish travels.
How does the medical screen work?
It’s actually quite simple. We’ll ask you some questions about any pre-existing medical conditions you have. To be on the safe side we’ll need you to give us as full and accurate answers as you can.
If you have a medical condition that’s not included in your policy, it could mean that in the event of a claim you’re not covered. So it might help to have details of your medical condition to hand during the process.
But don’t worry. The screening process doesn’t take long. There are a few conditions we can’t cover, but you can feel assured we’ll do everything we can to help you find the policy that’s right for you.
Questions will vary according to your condition, but the sort of thing we may ask you include:
• How long have you had this medical condition?
• Have you recently had surgery?
• Do you take regular medication for this?
You can answer these questions online or over the phone. They’ll help get you through the process, and they’ll be more than happy to answer other questions you may have.
The quote process is thorough but easy to follow and it only takes a few minutes. You can get a quote online now or call us 0800 033 4902.
Can I use my EHIC in Turkey?
No. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) does not cover Turkey, which is not in the EEA.
Is Turkey in Europe for travel insurance?
We group Turkey together with our European countries in terms of travel insurance. This means that if you’re travelling to Turkey on a Region 2 (European) Staysure policy, that you’ll be covered for your Turkish trip.
What are my choices of travel policy?
You have a choice of two main kinds of policy for you and your family’s travel plans in Turkey:
Single Trip Travel Insurance is ideal if you’re going for a one-off holiday or trip. A weekend break in Istanbul? A couple of weeks in Bodrum or Antalya? You’ll be covered with a Single Trip policy. You’ll also find it it flexible. You can add in as many destinations as you want within the trip, and your cover can last for up to 104 days. Cover only ends when your holiday is completed.
Annual Travel Insurance may be a better fit for you if you’re planning on taking more than one holiday within a year. It can cover all of your trips in Turkey in that time plus any trips within other European (Region 2) countries.
See our online policy documents to find the Regional cover that suits you (for instance Region 4 covers Turkey along with the rest of the rest of the world).
Annual insurance could save you up to £79*** compared to buying a single policy for each trip you take. If you’re under 70, you’ll be able to stay for up to 50 days in any one trip, up to a total of 183 days. And if you’d like to stay away for up to 100 days on one trip, you can also extend that for an additional premium.
Thinking of an even longer stay in Turkey?
If you fancy an even longer stay in Turkey than as offered in the above, then that’s a can-do too. Choosing a Long Stay policy means you’ll be covered for up to 550 days if you’re under 65.
Basic or Comprehensive cover?
Our two main levels of cover are available for both Single Trip and Annual Travel Insurance policies.
Our Basic policy is the cheapest option for your holiday to Turkey, but our Comprehensive policy is rated 5 Stars by Defaqto and has more features. Here’s how they compare:
What does our travel insurance cover?
For more details on the level and kinds of cover we offer, why not look at our policy documents. And if you still have any questions about what’s covered, please do call us on 0800 033 4902.
Can I make changes to my policy even after I’ve bought it?
Whether it’s an update on your medical conditions or medication, or adding optional extras to your holiday, please do speak to us and we’ll do our best to see if we can increase the coverage where necessary.
If something changes before you go on your trip, we do need you tell us, or it may mean that we can’t cover you for a claim later on.
Please be aware: while we can increase your policy coverage, we can’t reduce coverage in return for a partial refund. So please do check that you’re happy with the level of cover when you book.
What if I have to make a claim?
If you need to make a claim, you can call the number on your policy and we’ll be right on hand to help.
What if I need medical treatment?
If it’s an urgent medical matter you can use our medical emergency line. It works 24 hours a day, so it doesn’t matter where in the world you’re calling from. We can help you find a doctor and we’ll even provide translation if its needed.
What if political problems prevent or interrupt my trip to Turkey?
Turkey is a wonderful country to holiday, however there are parts where it is volatile, especially in recent years. So if you’re worried that your trip could be interrupted for political or other circumstances beyond your control, you might like to think about our Travel Disruption and Security Insurance Add-on.
This optional policy addition offers quality insurance for a variety of ‘unexpecteds’, from political unrest to overbooked flights, and from natural disasters right down to your transfer taxi breaking down.
But whether you choose this add-on or not, we really do recommend that before you travel you check the FCO’s page on Turkey’s safety and security for all the latest information.
If it’s unsafe to travel to your holiday region, then your insurance policy could no longer be valid.
Health and Travel information for Turkey
To enter Turkey, all British nationals need a visa. However, no visa is required for cruise ship passengers who hold ‘British Citizen’ passports and arrive at tourist ports, provided their visit does not exceed 72 hours. The Turkish government advises that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive in Turkey.
An e-Visa can be obtained from the official Republic of Turkey e-Visa website up to 3 months before your date of travel.
Visas can also be issued upon arrival and are valid for multiple stays of up to 90 days within a 180 day period. They cost £20 cash (Scottish and Northern Irish notes are not accepted). NB This service is soon to be phased out so do check that it is still available before you travel. Find out the latest from the Visa Contact Centre.
Please take care when you’re applying for a visa. Avoid unauthorised websites that may charge for information and the submission of e-Visa applications. These websites are not endorsed by the Turkish government and they may issue you with a fake e-Visa.
Travel safe with FCO travel advice
While Turkey is in many places a great country to holiday, there are parts where it is volatile. So before you travel there we really do recommend you check the FCO’s page on Turkey’s safety and security for all the latest information.
We’d also advise you to check with your airline or travel company before you travel to Turkey. You may need to turn up at the airport earlier than normal to get through the additional security checks in place.
Coastal resorts don’t appear to be significantly affected but you should remain vigilant and be aware that security forces activity may be obvious in some resorts. Be aware that some terrorist groups, including Daesh and the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, have threatened to attack tourist areas in Turkey, so take extra care.
Many parts of Turkey are also subject to earthquakes and tremors so take care to familiarise yourself with the relevant safety procedures and any advice given to you by the local authorities.
The NHS advises you to confirm with your doctor that all your boosters are up to date. The courses and boosters usually looked at are Rabies and Hepatitis B.
