Train going to the Channel Tunnel passing fields

Do I need travel insurance when travelling by Eurotunnel?

However you choose to get to mainland Europe, it’s important to cover your trip with travel insurance. Even if it’s only for a day trip to Calais, travelling through the tunnel or crossing the channel on a ferry can come with the same mishaps as a long trip away.

Having an EHIC means you may not need to hand over any Euros at local hospitals in a medical emergency. But with the current uncertainty over whether the EHIC will be valid after Brexit in countries such as France, more travellers may need to rely on their travel insurance for Europe if the EHIC or reciprocal healthcare agreement isn’t agreed (information accurate as of 11 October 2019).

Having an EHIC also doesn’t cover you for things like having to cancel your trip due to a medical emergency, helping you to get home safely if you do have a medical emergency or having your Euros stolen.

Having tailored travel insurance can give you the peace of mind you deserve, so you can relax.

Know before you go

With travel advice changing so quickly, it’s important you keep up-to-date with travel advice.

Before you travel, you’ll need to know:

  • UK Government (the FCDO) say it’s safe to travel to your destination. It’s important you check your destination is safe to visit regularly as advice can change. If the FCDO has advised against all but essential travel to your destination in Europe and you need travel insurance against FCDO advice then you can add European FCO Travel Advice Extension to your policy.
  • Your destination’s local government advice, safety guidelines and entry requirements.

We want you to have a safe and relaxing holiday. If you travel against government advice and don’t have the European FCO Travel Advice Extension, you won’t be covered if you need to claim. Even if advice changes while you’re on holiday, you won’t be covered if your destination was listed as unsafe when you travelled.

Should I declare my pre-existing medical conditions on my travel insurance?

You can declare your medical conditions through our online medical screening process, which is a straightforward set of questions for us to understand how your medical condition affects you. Or, if you prefer, you can complete the medical screening over the phone.

It’s important that all pre-existing conditions are declared on your policy. This will avoid large medical bills if you need treatment in another country. Failure to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions may affect the validity of your policy should you need to claim.
