Why do I need travel insurance for my diabetic retinopathy?

When living with a pre-existing medical condition, it’s essential that you declare it on your travel insurance policy. That way, if the worst happens, you’ve got help there to soften the blow.

Things go wrong on holiday more often than you might’ve realised, with 1 in 20 people claiming on their travel insurance in 2017.**

These problems can vary from lost passports, stolen luggage, flight delays or even a medical emergency that requires being flown home by air ambulance.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

With proper travel insurance, you can go away with peace of mind. We see that as the key to any happy holiday.

How do I declare diabetic retinopathy on my travel insurance?

For us to offer you a quote for your travels, we’ll first need you to complete our medical screening. This process is the opportunity to declare your pre-existing medical conditions and tailor your policy to your personal needs.

The medical screening is a straightforward set of multiple choice questions, designed for us to understand how your diabetic retinopathy, and any other pre-existing medical conditions you may have, affects you, so you’re covered properly.

It’s vital that the information you give us about your medical history is as accurate and thorough as possible. Failure to disclose important information about your pre-existing medical conditions and circumstances will affect the validity of your policy, should you need to claim later down the line.

I’m awaiting further treatment/investigations for my retinopathy. Can I still get cover?

If you’re awaiting investigations, we can still offer you cover, but wouldn’t be able to cover anything related to any pre-existing medical conditions, including your diabetic retinopathy.

We would still be able to cover you for other accidents and medical emergencies not related to your diabetic retinopathy or any other declared pre-existing conditions (as well as things like lost baggage and delays.)
