Travel Insurance after a Heart Bypass

It's important to be covered against something going wrong when you're away, whether the unexpected be a medical emergency or a lost passport.

If you’ve ever had a heart bypass, you will need to declare it on your travel insurance. The British Heart Foundation agrees – they recommend you get insurance to cover your heart conditions when planning your holiday.

Yes, you will need your doctor’s confirmation that you’re fit to travel, and will have been discharged from any post-op checks, after having your heart bypass before we can cover you with travel insurance.

Of course, everyone’s medical circumstances differ. But the types of questions you can expect for a heart bypass include:

• Have you ever been a smoker?
• How long ago was your most recent procedure?
• At any time BEFORE your most recent heart procedure, did you suffer a heart attack?
• Can you always walk 200yds (180 metres) on the flat without becoming short of breath?
• Have you been advised to take medication for high blood pressure?
• How many medicines does your doctor advise you to take for high blood pressure?
• Has your dose been increased or have you been prescribed a new tablet in the last six months?
• Have you been advised to take medication to lower your cholesterol?

As long as you’ve bought an insurance policy with us and you've fully declared any pre-existing medical conditions, then you're covered for any medical emergency abroad.

Our medical emergency support team is on call 24-hours a day, so it doesn't matter whether it's day or night where you are (you can even reverse the charges). We'll help you to find medical help with local doctors if need be, and also act as a translator if necessary.

It's vital you tell us about any alterations before you start your trip – for instance if you're adding optional extras to your holiday, or your medical condition or medication changes.

If we aren't informed, then you might not be properly covered if you have to claim.
