Some places are seen with the eyes, others with the heart... and some, like the  Costa del Sol, are discovered with the palate. From sun-drenched coastlines to inland villages, this corner of Andalusia invites you to savour its soul in ways that go far beyond the plate.

5 gastronomic experiences that will steal your heart

Whether you're looking for something different or want to treat someone to a gastronomic experience, the province of Malaga offers unique options for all tastes. Here are five ways to explore its flavours in a fresh light:

Artisan cheese workshop at Quesos Sierra Crestellina (Casares)

The Sierra Crestellina cheese factory in Casares offers one of the most complete gastronomic experiences in inland Malaga. This family-run dairy, founded in 2006, specialises in Payoya and Montejaqueña goat's cheese, native breeds that graze freely on the estate and in the surroundings of the Alcornocales Natural Park.

The experience begins with a guided tour of the facilities, where visitors get to see the animals up close and learn about their organic diet. Next comes the artisan workshop, where master cheesemakers guide participants through the cheese-making process: from curdling raw milk to moulding, pressing and salting.

The tour ends with a tasting of several of their specialities, such as butter-cured, semi-cured and blue cheese – accompanied by wines from the Serranía de Ronda and artisan bread from the region.

Wine-paired dinner at Los Patios de Beatas (Malaga city)

Los Patios de Beatas, located in a restored 18th-century mansion, is a restaurant and wine bar that has become a benchmark for haute cuisine in Malaga. Its offering combines creative cuisine, history and one of the most comprehensive wine cellars in Andalusia, with more than 600 national and international wines.

The visit begins with a warm welcome in the spectacular interior courtyard, where guests can admire the original features of the restored building. This is followed by a tasting menu, which changes according to the season and the produce available at the market. Each dish is carefully paired with wines selected by the restaurant's team of professional sommeliers, who explain each choice to enhance the experience.

The flavours stand out for their fusion of tradition and innovation: from salmon tartare with mango and ajoblanco (a traditional Andalusian soup) to Iberian pork cheeks with PX reduction or foie gras and apple millefeuille. The experience is rounded off with an optional guided tour of the historic premises.

Oleotourism at LA Organic (Ronda)

In the Serranía de Ronda, among hills of centuries-old olive trees and red dirt roads, lies LA Organic Experience, an organic farm converted into a leading destination for olive oil tourism. Designed by the iconic Philippe Starck, it combines contemporary architecture, sustainable agriculture and a passion for extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).

A guided tour of the organic olive groves introduces guests to native olive varieties and biodynamic farming techniques. The visit then continues to the oil mill, where the cold extraction process can be seen first-hand – from olive to bottle.

One of the most eagerly awaited moments is the guided tasting of their different types of EVOO, accompanied by local artisan breads, fruits and other organic products. To round off the experience, visitors can design their own personalised label, turning their bottle into a unique souvenir.

Oleotourism at Aceites Molisur (Alhaurín el Grande)

In Alhaurín el Grande, Aceites Molisur offers a truly authentic olive oil tourism experience. This family-run oil mill has revived the tradition of olive oil production through a tour that links the past and the present.

The oil museum is the first stop, home to a century-old mill from 1910, still in perfect working order. Here, visitors can discover the original tools and traditional processes used to extract EVOO. Next, they enter the oil mill, where the entire production process is explained, from the arrival of the olives to bottling.

A guided tasting introduces three olive oils, with experts helping guests develop a sense for their flavour, aroma and texture. It’s accompanied by artisan bread and rounded off with the chance to purchase exclusive products in the shop.

Iberotour with Langenal in the Genal Valley (Faraján)

The family-run company Langenal, based in Faraján, offers one of the most exclusive experiences for lovers of Iberian products.

Its star attraction, Iberotour, is a private trip in a Land Rover that takes you deep into the natural landscape, where Iberian pigs are raised in freedom. Guests travel across the estates while observing the animals up close in their natural environment.

The experience culminates with a gourmet tasting of Iberian cured meats and acorn-fed ham, paired with selected wines. The setting, the quality of the product and the expertise of this small company make Iberotour an ideal activity for discerning gourmets, luxury travellers and lovers of sustainable gastronomy.

Each of these options invites you to experience the Costa del Sol from within: to explore its villages, lose yourself among centuries-old olive groves, share a table with its people and savour recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.
