Cruise Cover
If you’re worried about health outbreaks, like the coronavirus or food poisoning, affecting your cruise holiday, it’s important you understand what you can be covered for.
If your cruise itinerary changes because of a health outbreak, meaning you won’t port there, you will be able to claim up to £75 for each missed port, with our optional Cruise Plus Cover.
If you’re worried about being confined to your cabin because of a health outbreak, you’ll be covered if you have Cruise Plus Cover, if a medical professional has confined you to your cabin because you’re unwell.
Take a look at our coronavirus travel insurance for more information on how you can be protected.
Yes, you can get cruise insurance, even if you have medical conditions.
It's important you declare any pre-existing medical conditions you may have on your travel insurance.
Through our trouble-free quote process, we’ll ask you to tell us about any symptoms, appointments or investigations you’ve had in the past two years as well as if you’ve ever had any of the following:
- Cardiovascular or circulatory condition, e.g. heart condition
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Blood clots
- Raised cholesterol
- Stroke
- Aneurysm
Please note: If you have ever had surgery, tests, anything undiagnosed or a terminal prognosis then you'll also need to make us aware.
With cruise travel insurance, if you buy your cover as soon as you’ve booked your cruise (or make sure your policy is active as soon as possible if you have an annual policy), you’ll be covered for cancellation.
For full terms and conditions visit our policy wording booklet.
A Single Trip Travel Insurance policy can be bought up to 18 months in advance of your cruise (Depending on age & medical score), which will cover you if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances.
One of the main attractions of a cruise holiday is that it gives people the chance to see different destinations in one trip.
When it comes to getting cruise travel insurance, it’s important you make sure all the countries/destinations you’re calling at are listed on your policy.
To add multiple destinations, you can use our quote form available here. If you have an existing policy, you can update your destinations by logging in to your My Staysure account.
If you’re taking an ocean or river cruise, or either form part of your trip, you’ll need cruise travel insurance or cruise cover.
We offer two ways to cover your cruise holiday.

Yes - river cruises are included in our cruise travel Insurance.
If your flight is delayed or cancelled, cruise travel insurance can still cover you even though your holiday is on a cruise ship or river boat.
You’ll need to check your policy to see what you’re covered for.
If you’re planning a UK cruise, some cruise lines including P&O and Cunard are currently asking for you to have a policy that covers you for £2m medical and repatriation expenses. We can endorse this with a UK policy.
A cruise is a trip on an ocean or river cruise ship where you stay onboard overnight with your own cabin. A ferry crossing does not count as a cruise (Even if travelling on a ferry overnight)
When you declare and cover all of your pre-existing medical conditions on your travel insurance, you will be covered if you need medical treatment while on your cruise.
Winter Sports Cover
To determine if you are covered for winter sports, it is important to review your validation certificate and check the level of cover you have. This will provide you with the necessary information regarding the extent of your insurance cover for activities such as skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and other winter sports.
If you are unsure about how to find your validation certificate or if you want to request a copy of it, you can visit our article about validation certificates.
Winter sports are included as a free benefit on our annual multi-trip comprehensive or signature policies:
Comprehensive insurance cover protects for a period of up to 21 days.
Signature insurance cover protects for a period of up to 28 days.
For more information on our terms & conditions as well as the table of benefits, please visit the policy wording booklet

Winter sports equipment:
We will pay the above price for hiring replacement winter sports equipment, if yours were to be stolen, lost or damaged, during your holiday.
Make sure you provide us with receipts and written confirmation of the original purchase and its replacement hire. We will take into account the age of your lost items to work out a claim.Ski pass:
You’ll be covered if your ski pass, which you’re carrying (or left in a safety-deposit box or safe) were to be stolen, lost or damaged.Ski pack:
We’ll cover the unused part of your ski pack if you’re unable to take part in winter sports because of illness or injury (as long as you are medically certified as being unfit for your activity.)
A ski pack includes ski-school fees or ski instructor fees, and the cost of any lift pass that you have booked. You must make sure you have a Medical Certificate to send to us if you need to claim to state you couldn’t take part.Winter sports equipment delay:
We will reimburse you if your equipment is certified by the carrier to have been misplaced for more than 12 hours on the outward journey of your trip.Piste closure:
We will reimburse your costs for travel to an alternative safe area, if you are unable to participate in any activities at your pre-booked resort for more than 24 consecutive hours, because of insufficient snow causing total closure of the lift system.Avalanche or Landslide:
We will cover you for the amount above for reasonable extra accommodation and travel expenses if avalanches or landslides affect the access to the ski resort, or public transport services are cancelled.In order to have cover for winter sports, you will need to add our optional winter sports cover to your policy. You can do this either when you purchase a new policy or if you have already purchased a policy, you can add the Winter Sports Cover through your online account before you travel. To add the Winter Sports Cover, simply login to your online account and follow the instructions provided in this article.
You will only have cover under your winter sports travel insurance if the resort authorities classify the avalanche risk as 1 or 2. This means that if the risk level is determined to be moderate or low, your insurance will provide protection.
However, if you choose to engage in activities in areas that are classified as avalanche rating 3 or above, your insurance coverage will not apply. This is because these areas are considered to have a high risk of avalanches, and participating in activities there would be considered too dangerous for cover purposes. It is important to be aware of the avalanche risk level before engaging in any winter sports activities to ensure that you are adequately protected by your insurance policy.
Resort authorities classify avalanche risk as follows:
1 = Low
2 = Moderate
3 = Considerable
4 = High
5 = Very High.Winter sports travel insurance is a specific policy that covers you for the extra risks that come hand-in-hand with winter sports. Risks that wouldn’t usually be covered by a standard travel insurance policy.
So, if your holiday involves skiing or snowboarding, add winter sports cover to your Comprehensive policy and protect yourself against the risks that come with snow, ice and high altitudes!
- Loss, theft or damage to equipment and ski passes
- Equipment hire fees if your equipment is lost, stolen, damaged or delayed
- Unused ski-school or ski-instructor fees
- Piste closure and avalanche/landslide delays
Winter sports cover is included with all Comprehensive & Signature annual multi trip policies.
So you can travel as often as you like, with the added bonus of:
- 21 days of winter sports cover for Comprehensive policies
- 28 days of winter sports cover for Signature policies.
Please note that for the Comprehensive & Signature annual multi trip policies, the cover is for 2 trips only and the number of days used per trip is based on the length of the trip, not just the number of days actually engaged in winter sports.
