Travel insurance after surgery
We know recovering from surgery or waiting for your doctor to discharge you from their care or give you “the all-clear" can feel like a hurdle when planning a trip. But don’t worry, there’s still a chance we can cover you.
If your surgery is listed above:
If you’re still waiting to be discharged from your surgery, we can cover you for all sections of the policy – apart from repatriation, medical expenses, cancellation or curtailment (cutting your trip short) if they’re caused by the procedure itself or the condition that led to it.
You’ll still be covered for any other pre-existing medical conditions, as long as they’re declared when you get your quote.
You’ll also be eligible for medical claims that aren’t related to your health history – such as needing treatment for a fall while you’re away.
If your surgery isn’t listed above:
If you’re waiting to be discharged from a surgery that isn’t listed above, you won’t be covered for medical expenses, cancellation, repatriation or curtailment (cutting your trip short) if they result from that surgery or any other pre-existing medical conditions.
You can, however, still be covered for medical claims that aren’t linked to your health history – for example, if you break your leg while travelling.
Requirements for travel insurance after surgery
To get covered, you’ll need to pass our medical screening and declare all pre-existing conditions to us.
If you’re waiting to be discharged from a recent surgery, you’ll also need to make sure that:
all surgical wounds are fully healed and no longer need a bandage or dressing
all external stitches, sutures, or staples have been removed
there have been no complications or infections after the procedure
your mobility is no worse than it was before you had the procedure
you get a letter from your GP (doctor) confirming that you are medically fit enough for your trip. Please note that your GP may charge for this – it isn’t a covered expense.
you understand that this policy will not cover the cost of any follow-ups required during the insured trip

Pre-travel checklist for travelling while awaiting surgery
Speak to your GP or surgeon to make sure you’re fit to travel and guidance on booking a trip suited to your needs.
Prepare any necessary documents about your surgery and health condition for your travel insurance provider.
If you’re taking any medication, leave plenty of time to prepare enough supplies for your entire trip, with extras in case of delays or lost baggage.
Check the rules on travelling with medication with the embassy of the country you’re going to and whether you need a signed doctor’s letter, which may incur a cost not covered by travel insurance.
If you travel with any equipment, such as mobility aids or portable oxygen, contact your airline in advance to make the necessary arrangements.
Find out the location of local healthcare and emergency services in the area you’re going to and how to use them, including contact numbers.
Let your doctor know where you’re staying and how to contact you while you’re away.
If you’re travelling in Europe, get a GHIC – remember, this doesn’t replace travel insurance.

Tips for travelling when you’re waiting for surgery
Some tips to help your trip be as pain-free and comfortable as possible:
Break up your travel time – avoid long journeys if possible, and choose flights with layovers or plan several rest stops if driving.
Take breaks – don’t overload your schedule and get plenty of rest when you need it.
Wear loose-fitting cotton clothes and lightweight, breathable walking shoes with a well-cushioned sole for support.
Use supportive luggage – consider suitcases you can push or backpacks with proper back support.
Do simple stretches to start and end your day to help prevent muscle strain and stiffness.
Always speak to your doctor before you go for advice tailored for your condition and needs.
A trip can be a great time to reorganise your thoughts and feelings, which can be especially important when you’re on a waiting list. Here are some things you can do for some peace of mind while you’re away:
Plan ahead – plan travel routes and book tables at restaurants in advance to avoid feeling rushed.
Stay hydrated – drink plenty of fluids but try to avoid too much caffeine and alcohol.
Get a good night’s sleep – book a room off busy main streets or invest in an eye mask and ear plugs.
Prepare a self-care kit – pack a small bag with things that give you comfort like your favourite book or a journal.
Stay connected with loved ones – communicate your needs to those you’re travelling with but also send some photos and videos home every now and again.
If you find yourself getting overwhelmed, stop what you’re doing and try some breathing exercises to help you relax.
Common questions for travelling while awaiting surgery or diagnosis
You might be able to get travel insurance if you’re awaiting a diagnosis. But we will not be able to cover any claims related to any of your pre-existing or undiagnosed medical conditions.
You can still be covered for medical emergencies and cancellations. So long as they are not related, directly or indirectly, to your pre-existing or undiagnosed condition.
You’ll still be covered for non-medical claims including travel delays, and lost or damaged baggage.
If you’d like to know more, please give a friendly member of our team a call.
If you’re waiting for an operation on our list of covered surgeries, you may still be able to get travel insurance.
We just won’t be able to cover you for cancelling or cutting your holiday short because of the condition you’re awaiting surgery for.
But, depending on the operation, we could cover you for other medical expenses relating to your condition, such as emergency repatriations (needing to be sent home).
Take a look at the list of operations we can cover you for above, or speak to a member of our friendly team over the phone for more information.
This depends on what surgery you’re waiting for and what condition you’re having surgery for.
Before you book a trip, always talk to your doctor or surgeon and follow their advice.
If you’re travelling against the advice of a doctor, we won’t be able to cover you if you need to make a claim.
Always talk to your nurse before you go so that you know how to properly take, store, and dispose of any medication you’re taking with you.
Some general tips for managing medication on your trip:
Keep them in their original packaging with copies of prescriptions.
Pack them in both your bag and suitcase in case any luggage is lost or delayed.
Prepare enough for the entire trip with extras in case of delays, and that they’re in date.
Set an alarm on your phone – it’s easy to forget when you’re away from home and your usual routine.
If they need to be taken on a fixed schedule and you’re travelling to a new time zone, speak to your nurse about changing your schedule to match the local time.
In an emergency, contact the local emergency services first, and then call our 24-hour emergency helpline. Our team will help arrange your care, find the most appropriate place for treatment and follow up care.
If you or someone on your policy is admitted to hospital or your outpatient treatment is likely to cost more than £350, contact us as soon as possible. Where you have a valid claim, and your medical expenses exceed £350 we will look to settle the bill directly with the medical provider where possible.
If you have a non-urgent medical concern, such as sickness, headaches, or mild pain, contact our helpline first for advice on where to go for assistance.
As good as travel insurance is, there are some things that can’t be covered.
You’re not covered for:
travelling against your doctor’s advice
claims for pre-existing medical conditions you haven’t told us about
routine check-ups, planned treatment or non-emergency care
travel for medical procedures abroad
reimbursement for lost, damaged or stolen medicines or equipment
incidents related to alcohol or controlled substances
strike action that was common knowledge at the time of booking
choosing private treatment when suitable public facilities are available
choosing not to travel
Discover more on what travel insurance covers. Always check your policy documents carefully to understand exactly what you’re covered for.
