What is an undiagnosed condition?
If you’re experiencing symptoms but haven’t yet received a confirmed diagnosis, you may be classed as having an undiagnosed condition. This is when a medical condition hasn’t been diagnosed by a doctor, e.g. unexplained pain, unusual fatigue, skin rashes, or difficulty breathing.
This is different to awaiting tests where you have seen a doctor and are awaiting results for a diagnosed condition.
You might have undiagnosed symptoms if:
you’re waiting for test results (e.g., blood tests, scans, or other investigations)
your doctor has suggested monitoring symptoms over time before confirming a diagnosis
Can I get travel insurance if I have an undiagnosed medical condition?
Waiting for answers about your health can feel overwhelming. Sometimes, a getaway can make all the difference.
If you're waiting for a diagnosis we may still be able to cover you, as long as you're:
fit and able to travel
not travelling against medical advice
not planning treatment, tests, or consultations abroad
Your travel insurance will include all the usual things like trip cancellation, lost baggage and pre-existing medical conditions. It's only your undiagnosed condition and cancellations related to it that won't be covered as part of your policy.

Pre-travel checklist for undiagnosed people
Speak to your GP to confirm you’re fit to travel and get guidance on any precautions you should take.
Have key medical details ready in case of an emergency, such as your symptoms, ongoing investigations, and any current treatments.
If you take medication, ensure you have enough for your entire trip, plus extra in case of delays or lost baggage.
Check travel rules for your medication by contacting the embassy of your destination country; some require a doctor’s letter, which may come with a cost not covered by insurance.
If you use medical equipment (such as a glucose monitor, mobility aids, or oxygen), check with your airline in advance to ensure it’s permitted and make any necessary arrangements.
Know where to find local healthcare at your destination, including emergency services and how to contact them.
Let your doctor know where you’ll be staying and how they can reach you if needed.
If you’re traveling in Europe, apply for a GHIC – but remember, it doesn’t replace travel insurance.

Tips for travelling when you’re awaiting diagnosis
Some tips to help your trip be as pain-free and comfortable as possible:
Pack any essential medication or supplies – even if you don’t have a diagnosis, take anything that helps you manage your symptoms.
Break up your travel time – avoid long journeys if possible, and choose flights with layovers or plan several rest stops if driving.
Use supportive luggage – consider suitcases you can push or backpacks with proper back support to make travelling easier.
Wear loose-fitting cotton clothes and lightweight, breathable walking shoes with a well-cushioned sole for support.
Do simple stretches to start and end your day to help prevent muscle strain and stiffness.
Take breaks – don’t overload your schedule and get plenty of rest when you need it.
A trip can be a great time to reorganise your thoughts and feelings, which can be especially important when you’re waiting for test results.
Here are some things you can do for some peace of mind while you’re away:
Plan ahead – plan travel routes and book tables at restaurants in advance to avoid feeling rushed.
Stay hydrated – drink plenty of fluids but try to avoid too much caffeine and alcohol.
Get a good night’s sleep – book a room off busy main streets or invest in an eye mask and ear plugs.
Prepare a self-care kit – pack a small bag with things that give you comfort like your favourite book or a journal.
Stay connected with loved ones – communicate your needs to those you’re travelling with but also send some photos and videos home every now and again.
If you find yourself getting overwhelmed, stop what you’re doing and try some breathing exercises to help you relax.
Maintaining a balanced diet while travelling can help you manage your energy levels and avoid discomfort, especially if you’re dealing with undiagnosed symptoms.
Here are some tips for eating well on the go:
Speak to your doctor before you travel – if certain foods have caused symptoms in the past, discuss them with your doctor. They can provide advice on what to avoid and any dietary precautions to take.
Stick to familiar foods – opt for meals with ingredients you know your body handles well. This can reduce the chance of discomfort when exploring unfamiliar dishes.
Carry snacks that work for you – pack non-perishable snacks like oat bars, plain crackers, or dried fruit. These can be handy for keeping up your energy without upsetting your system. Be sure to check you can take them with you.
Stay hydrated – drinking plenty of water is essential, especially during flights or in hot climates. Proper hydration can help keep fatigue and other symptoms under control.
Eat small, regular meals – instead of large meals, try smaller portions spread throughout the day. This can make digestion easier and keep you comfortable.
Check restaurant menus in advance – looking at menus online ahead of time can help reduce stress and make sure there are options that suit your needs.
Common questions for travelling with undiagnosed conditions
A pre-existing condition and an undiagnosed condition aren’t the same.
A pre-existing condition is a diagnosed medical issue that you’re already aware of before arranging your travel insurance. This might include long-term conditions like asthma or diabetes, or previous surgeries and illnesses that could affect your health while travelling. You’ll need to declare these when buying your policy so we can assess them and include cover where possible.
An undiagnosed condition refers to symptoms or health concerns that your doctor hasn’t yet pinpointed the cause of. This might mean you’re waiting for test results, undergoing further investigations, or monitoring changes with your GP. Without a confirmed diagnosis, we unfortunately can’t cover claims linked to your symptoms. That said, your policy can still cover other situations, such as medical emergencies, cancellations, and disruptions unrelated to the undiagnosed condition.
If you’re not sure whether your condition is classed as pre-existing or undiagnosed, we’re here for you. Call us, and our friendly team will explain your cover options.
If you’re waiting for test results or a diagnosis, you might still be able to get travel insurance with us.
While we might not be able to cover claims related to your undiagnosed condition, you’ll still be covered for:
✔ medical emergencies and cancellations, as long as they’re unrelated to your condition.
✔ non-medical claims, including travel delays, lost baggage, and passport replacement.
Because waiting for a diagnosis often involves unknowns – like ongoing symptoms, pending test results, or investigations without a confirmed outcome – our online quote form won’t be able to capture all the details we need. A quick call with our friendly team allows us to properly assess your case and give you the best possible advice on your cover options.
Whether it’s safe to travel while waiting for a diagnosis depends on your individual situation – your health, the reason for your tests, and most importantly, what your doctor recommends. For some, travelling might not pose any major risks, but for others, symptoms could worsen or require urgent care while away.
It’s always a good idea to have a conversation with your GP or specialist before making any travel plans. They’ll look at your symptoms, the timing of your tests, and any potential risks to guide you. If there’s even a small chance that your condition could get worse or you may need immediate treatment, postponing your trip could be the safest option.
In an emergency, contact the local emergency services first, and then call our 24-hour emergency helpline. Our team will help arrange your care, find the most appropriate place for treatment and follow up care.
If you or someone on your policy is admitted to hospital or your outpatient treatment is likely to cost more than £350, contact us as soon as possible. Where you have a valid claim, and your medical expenses exceed £350 we will look to settle the bill directly with the medical provider where possible.
If you have a non-urgent medical concern, such as sickness, headaches, or mild pain, contact our helpline first for advice on where to go for assistance.
As good as travel insurance is, there are some things that can’t be covered.
You’re not covered for:
travelling against your doctor’s advice
claims related to your undiagnosed condition – any medical issues linked to symptoms, tests, or investigations you’re awaiting results for won’t be covered
claims for pre-existing medical conditions you haven’t told us about
routine check-ups, planned treatment or non-emergency care
travel for medical procedures abroad
reimbursement for lost, damaged or stolen medicines or equipment
incidents related to alcohol or controlled substances
strike action that was common knowledge at the time of booking
choosing private treatment when suitable public facilities are available
choosing not to travel
Discover more on what travel insurance covers. Always check your policy documents carefully to understand exactly what you’re covered for.
When comparing travel insurance policies for undiagnosed conditions, you’ll want to look out for what’s covered and what’s not.
The right travel insurance for awaiting surgery should:
agree to cover your circumstances
cover medical expenses
have a high medical cover limit
help you to replace lost, stolen or damaged medications
cover you for cancellations or interruptions during your trip
include 24/7 emergency assistance services while abroad

If you’re diagnosed with a medical condition after buying your travel insurance, just give us a call. We’ll update your policy based on your new information.
Depending on the diagnosis, we may need to change your level of cover or remove some parts of your policy. The most important thing is to let us know as soon as possible so we can make sure your cover still suits your trip.
