Travel insurance for medical conditions at a glance

Medical cover isn’t a sideline for us: Staysure is a specialist in travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions, also known as medical travel insurance, and has been since 2004. We can cover more than 1,300 conditions* – from high blood pressure and arthritis to COPD, atrial fibrillation and cancer – across all ages. Our award-winning policies offer unlimited medical expenses on Comprehensive and Signature, cancellation and repatriation cover on every policy, and Travel Doctor,** a free GP video service for while you’re away. Getting a quote is simple online or over the phone.

What is a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance?

Think back over the last two years. Have you had any health issue, big or small, that involved:

  • Symptoms

  • Treatment and/or medication

  • Investigations and/or surgery

  • Medical appointments

If you’ve answered yes to any of the above questions, that’s a pre-existing medical condition as far as travel insurance is concerned.

Our medical screening has one purpose: making sure your cover actually covers you. A repeat prescription or a forgotten GP appointment can’t be protected if it never comes up. Our questions are built to catch those things for you, not to catch you out. It’s still quick, easy, and doesn’t always have to push your price up: well managed conditions can be simple to cover.

Can I get travel insurance with medical conditions?

If you’re asking this question, you might already be braced for a no – perhaps a standard insurer has turned you down, or your bank’s free travel insurance has excluded your condition. The good news is 97% of people who declare a pre-existing condition get medical cover with Staysure.

A diagnosis shouldn’t decide whether you travel. It just changes what your travel insurance needs to be able to do: pay for emergency treatment if symptoms flare up abroad, refund the prepaid elements of your trip if your doctor advises against flying, and organise a safe journey home if a commercial flight is no longer an option.

That’s the job we’ve been doing since 2004 – longer than almost any other UK travel insurance provider. For you, that means simple screening questions that make sense the first time you read them, underwriters who’ve seen complex medical histories before, a policy that can genuinely support you if something goes wrong, and should you ever need to claim, a team who understand the realities of travelling with a health condition.

How to buy travel insurance with pre-existing conditions

1. Tell us about your travel plans

First, the fun part – where are you off to? We ask because your medical cover needs to travel as well as you do: the right policy for a fortnight in Florida looks different to a week in the Algarve. We’ll ask about your destination, travel dates, who's travelling with you, and whether you’re after single trip or annual multi-trip cover.

And if a cruise is on the cards, remember name every port on your itinerary, plus any flights either side.

2. Share your medical history

Next, we’ll walk through anything that’s had symptoms, needed medication or medical advice or resulted in treatment in the last two years. If you’re getting a quote online, you can search from our database of over 1,300 conditions – simply start typing, select yours, and answer a few follow-up questions about how your condition(s) affects you.

If you’re dealing with a more complex medical history, or would simply rather talk it through with a real person, give our team a call instead. And if you’re not sure whether something counts, mention it anyway. It usually takes seconds to check, and is the best thing you can do to make sure you’re fully protected should you ever need to claim.

3. Get your personalised quote

With your trip and health details in hand, we'll put together your personalised quote. It will be built around everything you’ve told us, with cover for your conditions included in the price.

You’ll be able to pick from three levels of cover – Basic, Comprehensive and Signature – and add any extras your trip calls for, like Cruise Plus or winter sports cover (available on Comprehensive and Signature policies).

What does medical travel insurance cover?

What’s covered?

  • emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
  • getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
  • cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.
  • cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
  • lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
  • pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.

Example: You’re trekking the Grand Canyon’s famous rim trail when the dry, dusty air catches up with you – triggering a serious asthma attack. A local ambulance rushes you to hospital, doctors stabilise your breathing overnight, and you fly home two days later with specialist assistance. Because you listed asthma during screening, we’re able to cover the costs.

What isn’t covered?

  • cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.

  • missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike† severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.

  • undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.

  • unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.

  • activities not listed on your policy – like extreme sports or cruises, unless you’ve added them.

  • travelling against advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.

  • incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.

  • going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.

  • travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.

Example: After heart surgery, all you want is to get back out there. Your GP says wait, but you’ve got places to be. Your body has other ideas, and what should’ve been the first leg of a big adventure turns into an emergency landing and a scramble for care. Because you’ve travelled against medical advice, we wouldn’t be able to accept any related claim.

Important: GHIC cards and pre-existing medical conditions

Your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) and travel insurance are a team, and are usually at their best when you carry both.

A GHIC can help with:

  • access to state healthcare in participating countries
  • treatment on the same basis as a resident of that country

A GHIC won’t cover:

  • repatriation back to the UK
  • trip cancellation
  • medication replacement
  • baggage, passport or other travel problems

The gaps these cards leave can be eye-watering in an emergency. Our underwriters have seen one air-ambulance flight from the USA top £192,000. An EHIC or GHIC won’t pay a penny of that, but travel insurance can. So, declare your conditions, pack your card, and use it first if you need state healthcare – but let your travel insurance do the rest.

Remember, if you use your GHIC (or another reciprocal health agreement) to reduce the cost of your treatment, we’ll waive the excess on your emergency medical and repatriation claim. See our policy documents for more details.

Common medical conditions we can cover

Below are just a few of the conditions our medical travel insurance can often include. If you don’t see yours here, don’t fret! We can cover over 1,300 other medical conditions, subject to screening.

What medical conditions don’t need to be declared?

Not every condition counts. A routine pregnancy with no complications doesn’t need declaring. Neither does contraception where nothing related has caused problems, or the occasional over-the-counter standby, like vitamins or painkillers.

If you’re not sure if you should declare something – don't debate it at the kitchen table. One quick question to our expert team will make sure you’re fully protected.

What might I have forgotten to declare on my travel insurance?

    What our expert says…
“Does a tablet I’ve taken for years count? What about that check-up last year?” If you’re running through questions like these, you’re far from alone. When we surveyed travellers, the most missed must-declare conditions and medications were the everyday ones: HRT topped the list at 75%, with weight loss medication and GLP-1s (67%), arthritis (53%), chronic back pain (51%), thyroid conditions (48%) and mental health (41%) close behind – plus something 52% of people overlook entirely: a recent GP or hospital visit. Some didn’t think a condition controlled by medication needed mentioning, while others didn’t mention their conditions because they only wanted cancellation or baggage cover.  All of this can invalidate a claim. If it’s on your repeat prescription list or it’s had a doctor’s attention in the last two years, it’s probably with mentioning. In some cases, it won’t even change your quote. ”

What happens if you don’t declare your medical conditions for holiday insurance?

Leaving a condition out might trim a few pounds off your premium. But if you end up making a claim which links back to something you didn’t declare, we might not be able to pay it. In fact, an undeclared medical condition can put your entire policy at risk. That could leave you facing emergency treatment costs, cancellation costs or repatriation costs yourself.

Our research found that  1 in 6 UK adults haven’t been fully honest about their health when buying travel insurance, and 25% say they’d consider leaving out a “non-serious” condition to get a cheaper policy.*** It’s not just us urging honesty – MoneySavingExpert's Martin Lewis strongly recommends declaring every condition, warning that failing to do so can invalidate policies and see claims turned down.

    What our expert says…
“Whether you’ve booked a holiday abroad or are planning on enjoying a staycation in the UK, it’s safe to say that travel is good for your health. I think another way to help keep those cortisol levels low is to take out medical travel insurance. It can help give you the peace of mind to enjoy your holiday and all the health benefits it brings. ”

When to buy travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions?

Most people don’t buy travel insurance straight away. But if you have a pre-existing medical condition, waiting too long can leave serious gaps in your cover.

Our data from July 2025 to January 2026 shows that almost half of customers who purchased their cover in the final days before departure had a pre-existing medical condition to declare. Their policy kicked in just before departure, which means if plans changed, appointments moved, or they needed to cancel, the time leading up to their trip would've been unprotected.

That’s why experts recommend getting insurance as soon as you’ve booked your trip. Martin Lewis calls this ASAB, or buy As Soon As you Book. The earlier you buy, the better we can cushion the costs should your health throw off your plans.

    Get a quote

How much is travel insurance for people with medical conditions?

The price of your policy isn’t set by the name of your condition. It’s influenced by where your health is now, and what your policy needs to be ready to do because of it. For example, if you take regular medication, we price your policy so it can help replace it if it’s lost abroad, and so it can fund emergency treatment if the condition it manages flares up. Or, if you’ve had recent treatments, tests, or a new diagnosis, we'll make sure your policy is ready to absorb the potential costs of complications (up to your policy limits). If your condition is settled and well-managed, there’s often less your policy needs to stand ready for.

The rest of your quote takes into account the trip itself: and much of that sits in your control. Where you’re going (medical treatment in the USA is the most expensive in the world, while many European countries accept GHICs), how long you’re away, the level of cover you choose, any add-ons you choose and the policy excess all play a role in the final figure.

If you travel more than once a year, you might want to compare the cost of an annual multi-trip policy against a single-trip one before you buy. Our annual policies cover up to 183 days of travel across 12 months - and your quote is above £80, you can choose to spread the cost across the year with us.‡

How to get cheaper travel insurance with medical conditions

Want to shrink the costs of your travel insurance while still getting the most out of your policy? Keep these tips and tricks in mind before you buy:

    • Buy your policy early – taking out travel insurance soon after booking your trip can keep you covered if you need to cancel before you travel.

    • Choose a higher excess – a higher excess will help to lower your premium, but be sure to choose an amount you’re comfortable paying if needed.

    • Skip the add-ons – by not adding things like cruise or gadget cover if you don’t need them, you can lower your overall cover cost.

    • Declare your medical conditions – being open about your health history helps to ensure the right cover is in place and makes sure all your claims sail through.

    • Combine travellers on one policy – make sure all your travel companions are on the same policy, such as our family travel insurance, to save on cover costs.

    • Keep your baggage light – by taking only what you need, you can lower the baggage limit on your policy and bring your premium down.

    • Find a discount – make sure you swing by our discounts page before you buy so you can save on your policy.

The big-ticket costs travel insurance can help with

From October 2024 to October 2025, emergency medical expenses were our most common claim, and for good reason. Hospitalisation for a stomach bug in the USA with medical repatriation back to the UK could set you back £150,000+, according to the UK government.

In reality, the biggest claims are often more costly. While the average emergency medical claim on our worldwide policies was about £3000, the highest we paid was closer to an eye-watering £350,000.^

Over the same period, our second most common claim on worldwide policies was cancellation. If you need to pull the plug on your holiday, we can help you recover the prepaid costs – with the average cancellation claim on our worldwide policies coming in at around £2000, and the highest reaching more than £50,000.

    Absolutely wonderful care

Absolutely wonderful! Once I contacted you from a French hospital, you took complete charge of my journey home, ambulances to Rennes airport and from London, regular checking by really caring Staysure agents, from the moment I left the hospital to my arrival at home.

I never had to worry about anything and the care and consideration were second to none. I would recommend Staysure to all travellers 100%.

Your agent in Normandy (Shane Joyce) was beyond kind, as were all the ambulance men.

After being covered by travel insurance...

After being covered by travel insurance through my bank for a few years, I had to cancel my policy and search for a new provider that would also cover my child’s medical condition. I completed an online quote, but I was unsure about some of the terms and details.

Thankfully, I was contacted by their team, who took the time to explain everything clearly and helped me find the right cover at a very competitive price. I am very happy with the service I received, the level of support provided over the phone, and the detailed information they gave me. I feel much more confident knowing we have the right travel insurance in place for our needs. Highly recommend.

    Professional and friendly

My husband and I renewed our travel insurance with Staysure in June 2025, having been insured with them for many years. Although it took a little while to get a quote, the price was similar to other companies, and we chose to stay with Staysure because it seemed easier and we knew they had a good reputation.

Sadly, during our holiday in Austria, my husband became unwell on the fifth day and passed away four days later in the hospital from pneumonia. From the moment we contacted Staysure’s medical assistance team, their support was excellent. We had regular phone calls with them, and everyone we spoke to was friendly, professional, and reassuring.

Staysure handled the repatriation with great efficiency and care. It was a complicated process but it was done well. They also arranged new flights home for me, as well as taxis to and from the airports and we didn't have to pay/claim back the expenses with this. This was a huge help at a very difficult time.

All the outstanding expenses, such as the additional hotel nights for my daughter and I, were settled promptly and without any issues. The only item not covered was food/daily expenses, though no explanation was provided for this.

Overall, I was very impressed with how Staysure dealt with everything. Their professionalism and calm, considerate approach made a difficult situation much easier to manage, and I would confidently recommend them to others.
