What is travel insurance (also known as holiday insurance)?
Picture this: you’re 3 days into the trip of a lifetime when the unexpected crops up. A fall, a sudden illness or your luggage taking a detour across the globe. Without cover, you’ll be left to deal with the fallout alone, and abroad, that can get expensive fast.
According to GOV.UK, a stomach bug treated in a US hospital can cost over £150,000. Could you foot that bill yourself?
That's where holiday insurance comes in. Tell us about your trip and any pre-existing medical conditions, choose your policy level, and if something unexpected happens before or during your travels, we'll step in to cover the cost — so you can keep dreaming big.
What does travel insurance cover?
What's covered?
emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.
cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.
Example: You’re counting down the days to your next big beach holiday. Then life happens – a sudden illness sees you swap your sunbed for a hospital bed. Our Signature travel insurance covers cancellation up to £15,000, so we can help reimburse what you’ve already paid.
What isn't covered?
cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.
missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike** severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.
undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.
unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.
activities not listed on your policy – like extreme sports or cruises, unless you’ve added them.
travelling against advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.
incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.
going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.
trips taken for business or work – your policy is for leisure trips only.
travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.
Example: You’ve had high blood pressure for years, but it’s so well-managed that you barely think about it. If you don’t declare it when you get your holiday insurance quote and end up needing treatment abroad, we won’t be able to cover you.

Why do I need travel insurance if my EHIC or GHIC card covers me for medical expenses abroad?
What our expert says…
“Your UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will give you access to the same medical treatment as locals in most EU countries, so if you need to see a doctor or visit a hospital, you won’t be turned away. But that’s just the basics. It won’t pay to fly you home if you’re too unwell to travel – and that alone can cost tens of thousands. It won’t cover a cancelled trip, lost baggage or travel delays, and outside of the EU, offers no protection at all. Travel insurance can fill these gaps.

You can choose a slot that works for you, go through your symptoms, get your prescription and even use Travel Doctor to find your nearest pharmacy, so you can get your meds and get on with enjoying your holiday.
Everyone’s trip is different – that’s why we let you tailor your policy with optional extras, giving you even more protection for the type of holiday you’re taking.
You can add extra cover for:
gadgets – protect your mobile, tablet, camera and other devices while you travel
winter sports – cover for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities (included with Signature and Comprehensive annual multi-trip policies as standard)
golf holidays – protection for your golf equipment, green fees and more
cruise holidays – cruise-specific cover including cabin confinement and itinerary changes
excess waiver – reduce your out-of-pocket costs if you need to make a claim
travel disruption – cover for cancelled trips caused by unexpected events, like natural disasters, a food poisoning outbreak at your hotel, a terrorist event, war or conflict.
When you get a quote, you’ll be able to see which optional extras are available and choose the ones that suit your trip.
“Standard travel insurance doesn’t cover war or conflict. However, our Travel Disruption Extension (included on our Signature policies or available as an add-on) can cover cancellations, curtailment and additional travel costs if war breaks out after you’ve taken out your policy. Keep in mind that the situation must not already be happening or reasonably expected at the time of purchase, which is why it's best to buy your cover as soon as you've booked your holiday.
”
How to buy travel insurance
1. Run us through your travel plans
To get started on your quote, we’ll go over your travel plans. We need to know who’s coming along, where you’re heading, how long your trip will be, and whether you need insurance for a single trip or annual multi-trip cover.
Top tip: for cruises, it’s important to include every destination on your itinerary, as well as any flights to and from your port.
2. Tell us about your medical history
Next on the list, we’ll go over some health questions with you so we can make sure you get the best medical cover while travelling. Now is the time to tell us about any health concerns that needed medication, medical advice, or treatment during the last two years.
We’ll also ask about any past heart or circulation conditions – even if they weren’t recent.
3. Get your personalised quote
Once we have everything we need, we’ll give you your personalised quote, either online or by reading it out loud over the phone.
You’ll be able to choose your level of cover and add any optional extras that suit your trip, such as cruise travel insurance or winter sports cover. If you’d like more time to think it over, we can also send your quote by email so you can go through it in your own time.
Many experts agree that buying travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday is the best way to go. By doing this, you’ll be covered during the run-up to your holiday and while you’re abroad.
Despite the benefits of buying early, lots of people leave it to the last minute. Our sales data from July 2025 to January 2026 shows that nearly 54% of customers bought their policy within 0 to 30 days of travelling. About 30% bought within 0 to 9 days, and roughly 1 in 6 customers (16%) bought their policy within 0 to 3 days.
Travel insurance can’t be backdated, so it’s best to get it locked in before you are on holiday. If you still have to get your policy in place for future travels, it’s not too late. Simply get in touch with our friendly team to get a quote.
How much does travel insurance cost?
The cost of travel insurance depends on a few key factors. At Staysure, we work to keep premiums fair – so you only pay for the cover you need.
Here’s what affects your quote:
Your age – premiums are usually higher for older travellers due to increased medical risks.
Destination – healthcare costs vary around the world, so where you’re travelling can affect the price.
Trip length – longer trips often mean higher premiums.
Medical conditions – we cover thousands of pre-existing conditions, but some may increase your premium depending on the level of risk.
We know that every holiday – and every traveller – is different. That’s why we offer flexible options, fair prices, and clear cover levels to help you find the right protection at the right price. Many people find that the reassurance of cover far outweighs the cost, especially when travelling with medical conditions or on higher-cost trips.
How to get cheaper holiday insurance
Want to shrink the costs of your travel insurance while still getting the most out of your policy?
Keep these tips and tricks in mind before you buy:
Buy your policy early – taking out travel insurance soon after booking your trip can keep you covered if you need to cancel before you travel.
Choose a higher excess – a higher excess will help to lower your premium, but be sure to choose an amount you’re comfortable paying if needed.
Skip the add-ons – by not adding things like cruise or gadget cover if you don’t need them, you can lower your overall cover cost.
Declare your medical conditions – being open about your health history helps to ensure the right cover is in place and makes sure all your claims sail through.
Combine travellers on one policy – make sure all your travel companions are on the same policy, such as our family travel insurance, to save on cover costs.
Keep your baggage light – by taking only what you need, you can lower the baggage limit on your policy and bring your premium down.
Find a discount – make sure you swing by our discounts page before you buy so you can save on your policy.

Very competitive quote for loyal customer.
After receiving my renewal quote I decided to hunt for a cheaper competative quote. This wasn't as easy as I thought with all the covers being slightly different for my needs. In the end I called Safesure as a loyal customer and a discussed my requirements. A friendly chat soon generated a new competitive quote to meet my needs. It pays to be a loyal customer very happy.

Don’t just take our word for it – over 12 million travellers have trusted Staysure to protect their holidays since 2005. Here’s what some of them say:
Elizabeth Carter, April 2026
Fully satisfied, will definitely renew
Having looked at other Travel Insurance Companies, over the years, we always go with Staysure for our Holiday Insurance. The Website is easy to navigate and if I encounter any problems I phone and speak to someone. This company is the best I've found for those with medical issues.
Graham, March 2026
A huge relief
My wife broke her ankle in Spain. They arranged a repatriation company to plan and implement everything. From ambulance collection, paramedic, flights, and transfer to hospital. It was a huge relief to have everything covered at this stressful time.
AB, March 2026
Outstanding support during a medical emergency abroad
We found ourselves on the other side of the world facing an urgent medical emergency, which required immediate treatment followed by ongoing care and a hospital stay.
Throughout this very stressful time, our insurance provider was in constant contact with us. They offered clear guidance on what to do, where to go, and how to proceed at every stage. Their support gave us reassurance and confidence in a difficult situation.
They also communicated directly with the hospital during our stay, ensuring everything was handled smoothly and without unnecessary delays. Thanks to their efficiency and professionalism, all medical costs were settled, and we were able to leave the hospital without any financial concerns.
We are extremely grateful for their support, responsiveness, and high level of care. We would not hesitate to recommend their services to others.

Other travellers ask...
Yes – holiday insurance and travel insurance mean the same thing. Both help protect you against unexpected costs if something goes wrong before or during your trip, such as medical emergencies, cancellations, travel delays or lost luggage.
Staysure travel insurance includes cover for many pre-existing medical conditions, so you can travel with confidence.
Travel insurance is a safety net designed to protect you from the potential pitfalls of travelling abroad.
To get travel insurance, you’ll need to tell an insurer (like us) what you’ll be looking to protect. We'll need to know the basics, like where you're going, how long for, who'll be travelling with you, and if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.
You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to our cover options. We make it easy to protect everything from one trip to multiple holidays across the year, and with our optional add-ons, like winter sports or cruises, you'll be covered for your favourite activities too.
From the moment you’ve chosen and paid for your cover, you’ll be protected for all of the things outlined in your policy documents (unless you’ve chosen to delay your start date).
That means if something goes wrong, like a medical emergency, a cancelled flight, lost luggage or a travel delay, you should be able to make a claim. Simply provide evidence of what happened, and we’ll cover up to the limits agreed in your policy.
Holiday insurance doesn’t just help pay bills either. A good policy can also provide practical help – for example, we offer a 24/7 emergency medical helpline and can co-ordinate your care abroad or locate pharmacies stocking specific medication. If you’re too unwell to travel home on a standard flight, we can also charter specialist medical transport to get you and a companion home safely.
In the UK, taking out travel insurance before you go isn’t a legal requirement.
That said, there’s a handful of destinations that won't let you into the country without insurance, including Cuba, Qatar and Tanzania. Always check the specific entry requirements for your country using the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) website when you book your holiday and before you travel.
It’s also worth knowing about the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), a biometric border process for UK travellers entering the Schengen area. As part of the broader checks involved in EES registration, you may be asked about your travel plans, including your travel insurance. This is uncommon and likely won’t affect your entry to the country, but it's worth having your policy details to hand, just in case.
Some travel insurers cut off cover at milestone birthdays like 60 or 70, which can make finding a policy feel frustrating in your golden years. However, at Staysure, we believe that, as your age gets bigger, so should your dreams. That’s why we cover pre-existing medical conditions, and all ages.
That’s all ages – from those dreaming big in their 80s, 90s and beyond to little ones going on their first holiday. In fact, we offer family and group travel insurance policies, so you and your nearest and dearest can travel boldly.
Some packaged bank accounts and premium credit cards offer holiday insurance as a perk – so you may well already have cover. Our experts recommend double-checking before you buy a separate travel insurance policy in order to avoid doubling up.
Make sure this check is thorough, as it could be the difference between an accepted and rejected claim. Bank travel insurance tends to come with terms and conditions that most people aren’t aware of. For example, cover might be limited to cardholders who paid for their trip using that specific account. There may be an age limit of 65 or over 70. There could even be restrictions when it comes to pre-existing medical conditions that specialists would otherwise cover as standard.
Our own research, based on a survey of 2,000 UK adults, found that bank travel insurance claims are 9% more likely to be rejected than claims made to a specialist travel insurer.
So, take a moment to read the small print and ask the right questions. If there’s any doubt, a dedicated policy is likely to give you more certainty.
Our standard travel insurance covers you for the basics, including emergency medical treatment, cancellation and lost baggage. However, cruises come with a very particular set of sea-(and river)-specific risks.
Our Cruise Plus add-on could be just the ticket if you're looking to cover:
missed port departure – a cruise is the only holiday where your bedroom is always moving, so it’s important you have insurance that covers this.
cabin confinement – if you’re advised to stay in your cabin due to illness, we’ll pay up to £75 for every full 24 hours you are confined, up to a total of £1000.
unused excursions due to cabin confinement – if you’ve booked and paid for an excursion but can’t attend because you’re confined to your cabin, you won’t lose out.
changes to your itinerary – if your cruise schedule changes and you miss planned stops, you can be compensated for the disruption.
cruise interruptions – if your trip is disrupted and you need to leave early, we might be able to help with additional costs.
emergency evening-wear – if your formalwear doesn’t make it on board, we’ll cover the cost of replacements up to £100.
Staysure covers more than 80 activities as standard, including jet skiing, horse riding, cycling, camel trekking, golf, canoeing, and glacier walking. So, if you fancy trying something new on holiday, there’s a good chance you’re already covered without needing to do anything extra.
Winter sports cover (including skiing, snowboarding, outdoor ice skating, snow-shoeing and more) is included as standard on our Comprehensive and Signature annual multi-trip policies.
A few activities, like professional or competitive sports and motorised racing fall outside of what our policies protect. If you’re planning something adventurous and you’re not sure whether it’s covered, give our team a quick call to double-check.
For more information on what activities holiday insurance covers, have a look at our policy documents.
For most people, the cost of a holiday insurance policy is a fraction of what a single claim would amount to. For that fraction, you’ll be protected against some of the most disruptive and expensive things that can happen before or during your trip.
Staysure covers more than 1,300 medical conditions.† In fact, 97% of customers are able to get medical cover with us.
When you get a quote, we’ll help you complete a medical screening. This is a straightforward set of questions about your health history over the last 2 years. We’ll ask about any:
Appointments
Symptoms
Tests or investigations
Treatments
Hospitalisations
Medication
We also need to know if you've ever had heart conditions or circulation problems.
Based on your answers, we’ll tell you what we can cover, at what level and at what price. Some conditions might affect the price you’ll pay, while others, like pregnancy (as long as there are no complications) and menopause won’t add anything. We’ll always be clear about what exactly your policy includes before you commit to anything.
On the rare occasion we aren’t able to cover you, we’ll either put you in touch with one of our condition-specific partners, or direct you to the BIBA medical directory.
The best travel insurance is the one that offers the right cover for your personal circumstances. Look for:
strong medical cover (especially if you have pre-existing conditions)
fair cancellation limits
high-quality customer service
24/7 emergency medical assistance
Staysure travel insurance is Defaqto 5-star rated and trusted by millions of UK travellers for its wide cover and reliable support.
You can take out holiday insurance on behalf of another person, whether that’s a parent, a child, a companion or someone you care for.
There are a few things worth keeping in mind when you do this, however, the most important of which is consent. The person being insured needs to know a policy is being taken out in their name.
The policy also needs to be accurate. For example, if you’re buying on behalf of an elderly parent, it’s important you know their full medical history, their current medications and any recent diagnoses, symptoms, and appointments. Getting those details wrong, even with the best of intentions, could affect the validity of their cover.
For that reason, the best way to get travel insurance on behalf of someone is to do it with them. Our friendly team will help you through the process.
Our claims process is designed to be simple and fair – we’re here to support you from start to finish.
UK-based claims team – here to help you every step of the way.
Quick and fair assessments – with fast payouts on approved claims.
Clear guidance – we’ll let you know exactly what information we need.
If you need to make a claim:
Contact Staysure as soon as possible – our UK-based claims team are ready to help.
Even if you’re staying in the UK, travel insurance can still protect you if something unexpected disrupts your trip. While the NHS covers your medical care, Staysure UK travel insurance can cover:
cancellations or cutting your trip short
lost, stolen or delayed baggage
travel delays and missed departures
personal liability
lost travel documents
up to £10,000 for extra transport and accommodation if you can't continue your trip for medical reasons
You’ll need to be staying for at least two consecutive nights in pre-booked and pre-paid accommodation for UK cover to apply.
Yes – Staysure travel insurance can cover flight cancellations if your trip is cancelled for an insured reason, such as unexpected illness, injury, severe weather or mechanical failure. You may be able to claim for unused travel and accommodation costs.
Some flight disruptions (such as airline strikes, weather delays or breakdowns on the way to the airport) may also be covered under the travel delay, missed departure or missed connection sections of your policy, depending on your level of cover.
Make sure you allow enough time for your journey, as claims won’t be covered if you haven’t allowed sufficient time to reach your departure point or have less than two hours between connecting flights.
You can make changes to your policy, online and in your own time with My Staysure.
It’s quick and easy to make changes to your policy online. If you need to make simple changes such as updating traveller details or renewing a policy that’s details are staying the same, just visit your My Staysure account.
