Do I need Holiday Insurance for Europe?

The Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends that people buy holiday insurance for every trip they take abroad, including any within Europe.

A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles holders to free or reduced cost medical care and treatment within the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

It is a condition of Staysure insurance when traveling to Europe that you do obtain an EHIC. This will waive your travel insurance excess should you need to make a medical claim. (This could amount to £100 per person on a Basic policy and £65 for Comprehensive policies.)

A Staysure policy can offer additional support including:

  • Medical treatment outside the EEA and Switzerland (note: Turkey is not a current member of the EEA)
  • Costs associated with rescue and repatriation
  • Extra travel and accommodation costs due to illness
  • Losses from trip cancellation, curtailment and interruption
  • Lost or stolen property such as passports, baggage or precious items

Travellers should also be aware that the EHIC is not accepted in the following places.

What countries are not covered with my EHIC?

  • The Channel Islands, including Guernsey, Alderney and Sark
  • The Isle of Man
  • Monaco
  • San Marino
  • The Vatican

The NHS recommends that holidaymakers carry both a valid travel insurance policy and the free EHIC which could also save you the excess if you make a medical claim with Staysure – so please remember an EHIC should not be considered a replacement for quality travel insurance. You can apply for one here or by calling 0300 330 1350.

End Supplier Failure

In recent years we have seen the collapse of several airlines and travel companies, leaving many holidaymakers out of pocket as their arrangements were not covered by ABTA or ATOL Licences.

In response to customer concerns we have received about this, Staysure now offers an End Supplier Failure add-on to our Comprehensive Travel Insurance policies. This provides you with cover of up to £3000 against the insolvency of travel and hotel companies etc. (which do not form part of a package holiday).

You can find the policy add-on our website, and please do call us if you would like to discuss any queries with one our travel insurance specialists.

What happens if I develop a medical condition after I have bought my policy?

Do I need vaccinations before travelling in Europe?

Risks to health vary from traveller to traveller, and according to holiday conditions. The NHS notes that risk of Tick-borne Encephalitis in Europe, including the UK, is higher during the warmer months, for those exposed outside in forests, woods, and grassy areas.  Check with your GP for advice if you have concerns about your personal circumstances and destination.
