Over 70s travel insurance at a glance
Staysure is a specialist provider of travel insurance for over 70s, offering single-trip and annual multi-trip holiday insurance for cancellation, lost baggage, emergency medical expenses and more. Our policies are suitable for most over 70s, from those with a clear history to those managing multiple medical problems. We cover pre-existing medical conditions and all ages – key things that some other insurers won’t. Getting a quote is easy and can be done online or over the phone.
We’ve specialised in travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions since 2004. 97% of customers are able to get medical cover with us. We hold a Defaqto 5-star rating for our Signature and Comprehensive policies, and have more 5-star Trustpilot reviews than any other UK travel insurance provider.
Seventy and just hit your travelling stride? Our travel insurance is there to lend a helping hand if trips don’t go to plan. That could mean being forced to cancel before you’ve even started packing, your baggage galivanting off across the globe or having a medical emergency in the middle of your holiday.
Finding an insurance company willing to cover people over 70 years old can be difficult. Some general travel insurers, banks and credit cards set upper age limits or refuse to cover pre-existing medical conditions, leaving senior travellers in the dust.
That’s why Staysure offers travel insurance for all ages. Whether you’re freshly 70 or a centurion, we’re here to help you say yes to that long-haul flight, round-the-world cruise or once-in-a-lifetime adventure with up to unlimited medical expenses, £15,000 cancellation cover** and more.
Do I need over 70s travel insurance if I have a GHIC?
What our expert says…
“Bring your GHIC card along for the adventure. It can help cover state-provided treatment in Europe, so it’s well worth having, but it’s not a replacement for travel insurance. This is because it won’t cover things like replacing lost baggage, cancelling your trip before you travel or, most importantly, getting you home if you’re seriously unwell. The right policy can step in to cover those bigger costs.
”

What does over 70s travel insurance cover?
What’s covered?
emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.
cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.
Example: You’re soaking in the Andalucian sun on a Guadalquivir River cruise when a slip on deck leaves you with a broken leg. Your policy could cover transport to the nearest clinic, surgery, a five-night hospital stay and a nurse-escorted flight back to the UK when you’re fit
What isn’t covered?
cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.
missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike*** severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.
undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.
unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.
activities not listed on your policy – like extreme or cruises, unless you’ve added them.
travelling against advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.
incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.
going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.
travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.
Example: You book a bucket-list base jump on a whim, but it isn’t one of the 80+ activities covered as standard on your policy. If you land badly and need medical treatment, we won’t be able to cover the costs. So, before you say yes to something outside the box, double-check the activities list in our policy documents.

How to buy over 70s travel insurance
Whether you prefer completing a quick online quote or speaking to someone over the phone, we make buying travel insurance seamless.
1. Run us through your travel plans
To get started on your quote, we’ll go over your travel plans. We need to know who’s coming along, where you’re heading, how long your trip will be, and whether you need insurance for a single trip or annual multi-trip cover.
For cruises, it’s important to include every destination on your itinerary, as well as any flights to and from your port.
2. Tell us about your medical history
Next on the list, we’ll go over some health questions with you so we can make sure you get the best medical cover while travelling. Now is the time to tell us about any health concerns that needed medication, medical advice, or treatment during the last two years.
3. Get your personalised quote
Once we have everything we need, we’ll give you your personalised quote, either online or by reading it out loud over the phone.
You’ll be able to choose your level of cover and add any optional extras that suit your trip, such as cruise travel insurance or winter sports cover. If you’d like more time to think it over, we can also send your quote by email so you can go through it in your own time.
Many experts agree that buying travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday is the best way to go. By doing this, you’ll be covered during the run-up to your holiday and while you’re abroad.
Despite the benefits of buying early, lots of people leave it to the last minute. Our sales data from July 2025 to January 2026 shows that the majority of travellers purchased their policy within 30 days of leaving, with a significant proportion doing so within just a few days of departure.
Travel insurance can’t be backdated, so it’s best to get it locked in before you are on holiday. If you still have to get your policy in place for future travels, it’s not too late. Simply get in touch with our friendly team to get a quote.
Insurance premiums generally increase as you get older. This is because your likelihood and cost of making a claim tend to go up with age. ABI data shows that the average claim for travellers in their early 70s was £1,830, compared with £518 for those in their late 30s.
Your policy price reflects the cost of covering that risk, but isn’t based on age alone. We’ll also factor in things like:
where you’re travelling and the cost of healthcare there
how long you’ll be away for
any medical conditions you tell us about
How to get cheaper over 70s holiday insurance
Want to shrink the costs of your travel insurance while still getting the most out of your policy? Keep these tips and tricks in mind before you buy:
buy your policy early – taking out travel insurance soon after booking your trip can keep you covered if you need to cancel before you travel.
choose a higher excess – a higher excess will help to lower your premium, but be sure to choose an amount you’re comfortable paying if needed.
skip the add-ons – by not adding things like cruise or gadget cover if you don’t need them, you can lower your overall cover cost.
declare your medical conditions – being open about your health history helps to ensure the right cover is in place and makes sure all your claims sail through.
combine travellers on one policy – make sure all your travel companions are on the same policy, such as our family travel insurance, to save on cover costs.
keep your baggage light – by taking only what you need, you can lower the baggage limit on your policy and bring your premium down.
find a discount – make sure you swing by our discounts page before you buy so you can save on your policy.
The big-ticket costs travel insurance can help with
From October 2024 to October 2025, emergency medical expenses were our most common claim, and for good reason. Hospitalisation for a stomach bug in the USA with medical repatriation back to the UK could set you back £150,000+, according to the UK government.
In reality, the biggest claims are often more costly. While the average emergency medical claim on our worldwide policies was about £3000, the highest we paid was closer to an eye-watering £350,000.^
Over the same period, our second most common claim on worldwide policies was cancellation. If you need to pull the plug on your holiday, we can help you recover the prepaid costs – with the average cancellation claim on our worldwide policies coming in at around £2000, and the highest reaching more than £50,000.

Travel tips for adventurous 70-somethings
Before you book your trip
When you’re window shopping for your next holiday, there are a few things to check before you put deposits down.
Check the latest travel advice from official sources, including public health updates. Gov.uk and fit for travel NHS both provide guidance.
Speak to your GP or travel nurse. Ask if you’re fit to travel, whether you need vaccinations, and what to do about any recent treatment or test results.
Be sure to call ahead to your hotel and transport providers to check for any accessibility needs, even if you’re on an inclusive holiday or guided tour.
Getting ready to travel
If you’re in the majority of over 70s who take at least one medicine, then give yourself plenty of time to order your prescriptions before you trip. Remember, you’ll need to bring extra just in case.
Carry key documents. Print or download your travel insurance validation certificate and contact details so they’re easy to access while you’re away.
Label your luggage and essentials. Add your name and contact number to bags andmedication.
Check if your location is covered by data roaming by your mobile network provider, or if you’ll need to find another way to access the internet while you’re out and about.
Bring your GHIC or EHIC card. This gives access to state healthcare in EU countries, but it’s not a substitute for travel insurance.
Staying well abroad
Bring any medication in your carry-on luggage so it can’t be lost by the airline and is on-hand in case you need it while flying.
Keep moving during journeys, including stretching and getting up to move regularly – this can reduce your risk of blood clots.
Don’t try to squeeze too much into one day – space out your activities throughout your trip and plan for plenty of breaks.
Eat and drink with care. Stay hydrated, especially in hot climates or at sea. Light meals can help prevent fatigue or dizziness.
If you’re unsure an activity you want to do is suitable for you, like a hike or guided tour, talk to your GP or nurse in advance.
Common questions for travellers in their 70s
Travel insurance helps cover the cost if something goes wrong while you’re away. You pay a set price, and in return, your policy can protect you from unexpected costs. These costs might include needing treatment abroad, cancelling your trip, or losing your bags. If something covered by your policy happens, your insurer steps in to help.
For over 70s, the product works in the same way as it does for any age. What changes is how it's tailored. You’ll often need to declare any medical conditions, choose a level of cover that suits your plans, and decide if you’d like to add extras like cruise or winter sports protection †.
We offer two types of travel insurance for people over 70, depending on how often you plan to travel:
Single trip cover – if you’re only planning one holiday, single-trip cover might be more cost-effective than annual cover.
Annual multi-trip cover – if you're taking more than one trip in the next 12 months. You’ll be covered for multiple holidays, up to a set number of days per trip.
Both options include access to our full range of cover. This can include protection for pre-existing medical conditions, depending on what you tell us during your quote.
Once you’ve chosen the type of policy, you’ll also be able to:
Select your destination – this affects what your policy includes and how much it costs.
Choose your level of cover – all policies come with medical cover, cancellation protection and baggage cover as standard, but you can pick the level that suits your plans:
Basic – essential cover generally, suitable for shorter trips with fewer valuables.
Comprehensive – a more generous level of protection.
Signature – our highest cover, with no excess to pay and the most extensive limits.
Add optional extras – these help tailor your policy to the type of trip you’re taking. You might want:
gadgets – protect your mobile, tablet, camera and other devices while you travel
winter sports – cover for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities (included with Signature and Comprehensive annual multi-trip policies as standard)
golf holidays – protection for your golf equipment, green fees and more
cruise holidays – cruise-specific cover including cabin confinement and itinerary changes
excess waiver – reduce your out-of-pocket costs if you need to make a claim
travel disruption – cover for cancelled trips caused by unexpected events, like natural disasters, a food poisoning outbreak at your hotel, a terrorist event, war or conflict.
We’re often able to include a wide range of conditions that are more common later in life. In fact, up to 97% of people who tell us about their medical history are offered a policy.
You can browse for your condition here, or simply start a quote. Even if your condition isn’t listed, we might still be able to help.
When you get a quote, we’ll ask a few straightforward questions to understand your health. You can complete the screening online or over the phone – whichever feels easier. It’s not a test or a judgment – just a way to make sure your policy reflects your needs.
A pre-existing medical condition is any illness or diagnosis you’ve had treatment, medication, symptoms or appointments for in the last two years. We’ll also ask if you’ve ever had heart problems, circulation issues or other long-term concerns, even if they were years ago.
Being open about your health means your policy can do its job properly.
Want more guidance on what to tell us? Read our guide to declaring medical conditions.
Many travel insurance providers set an upper age limit – often around 70 or 75 – which can make finding the right policy harder as you get older. At Staysure, we do things differently.
We offer travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions, and all ages. In fact, we specialise in travel insurance for seniors.
You can explore our age-specific travel insurance pages here:
Many bank travel insurance policies include age limits or restrictions around pre-existing medical conditions. That means you could be travelling without proper protection and not realise it, especially if you haven’t read the small print.
Our Don’t Bank On It Report found that 3.3 million UK holidaymakers over 50 may be travelling with inadequate insurance, often because they’re relying on complimentary cover from their bank. One in four adults said they chose bank insurance because it was free, but those who relied on it were more likely to have a claim rejected.
That’s where specialist insurance providers like us come in. At Staysure, we offer cover for all ages, and pre-existing medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes or a history of stroke – if you tell us about them when you get a quote.
If you’re not sure what your bank policy includes, or whether it’s enough for your trip, it could be a good idea to speak to a specialist.
There’s no single ‘best’ policy for everyone – but the right one should feel like it’s made for you, not just someone your age.
This often means finding a policy that allows you to declare any health conditions clearly, with support if you need it. Many senior travellers live with long-term conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. The right insurance gives you the chance to have these included, so you’re properly protected if they affect your trip.
It also helps to know what else is built in. Medical cover should go well beyond the basics, not just hospital bills, but things like ambulance transport, staying longer if you're too unwell to travel, or getting you home safely with medical support. You might also want cover for cancelling your trip if your health changes before you go.
Some policies include generous baggage limits or options to remove the excess, whilst others offer extras like cruise cover. The important thing is knowing how the policy works with your situation, not just your destination.
Staysure covers 100+ activities as standard, whatever your age. That means less poolside lounging and more snorkelling trips, tennis court matches, scenic bike rides and banana boating with the grandkids.
As long as they’re listed in your policy and you’re taking part on a non-professional, non-competitive basis, you can be covered.
See our policy documents for a full overview of the activities we cover.
Our standard travel insurance covers you for the basics, like emergency medical treatment, cancellation and lost baggage. However, cruises come with a very particular set of sea-(and river)-specific risks.
Our Cruise Plus add-on could be just the ticket if you're looking to cover:
missed port departure – a cruise is the only holiday where your bedroom is always moving, so it’s important you have insurance that covers this.
cabin confinement – if you’re advised to stay in your cabin due to illness, we’ll pay up to £75 for every full 24 hours you are confined, up to a total of £1000.
unused excursions due to cabin confinement – if you’ve booked and paid for an excursion but can’t attend because you’re confined to your cabin, you won’t lose out.
changes to your itinerary – if your cruise schedule changes and you miss planned stops, you can be compensated for the disruption.
cruise interruptions – if your trip is disrupted and you need to leave early, we might be able to help with additional costs.
If you’re taking the kids, grandkids, or even the great grandkids on holiday, you don’t need to take out insurance with lots of different providers.
Our group travel insurance is likely the best fit for a multi-generational getaway. You can cover up to 9 people online, or up to 30 when you call us. You don’t all need to live at the same address.
Whether you choose group cover, you’ll all be covered under one policy, which keeps things simple. And if one person needs to cancel or cut short their trip due to a medical emergency, the rest of your group can be covered too.
You can take out holiday insurance on behalf of another person, whether that’s a parent, a child, a companion or someone you care for.
There are a few things worth keeping in mind when you do this, however, the most important of which is consent. The person being insured needs to know a policy is being taken out in their name.
The policy also needs to be accurate. For example, if you’re buying on behalf of an elderly parent, it’s important you know their full medical history, their current medications and any recent diagnoses, symptoms, and appointments. Getting those details wrong, even with the best of intentions, could affect the validity of their cover.
For that reason, the best way to get travel insurance on behalf of someone is to do it with them. Our friendly team will help you through the process.
If you’re one of the lucky 371,000 households with a bolthole abroad, we’ll be able to cover your visits there. The important thing is choosing a travel insurance policy that matches your cover needs, so you don’t pay more than you need to while staying fully protected.
Because you own the property, you likely won’t face accommodation costs if you need to cancel – so your cover on this front might be lower than a standard holiday. With this said, you’ll still need to make sure your travel insurance has ample medical and repatriation cover. And it’s also worth considering a trip disruption add-on and tailoring your baggage cover to match the value of your luggage.
If you visit your holiday home more than once a year, annual multi-trip cover may give you better value overall compared to buying multiple single-trip policies.
