Over 50s travel insurance at a glance
Staysure is a specialist provider of travel insurance for over 50s and seniors, offering single-trip and annual multi-trip holiday insurance for cancellation, lost baggage, emergency medical expenses and more. Our policies are suitable for most over 50s, from those with a clear history to those managing multiple medical problems. We cover pre-existing medical conditions and all ages – key things that some other insurers won’t. Getting a quote is easy and can be done online or over the phone.
We’ve specialised in travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions since 2004. 97% of customers are able to get medical cover with us. We hold a Defaqto 5-star rating for our Signature and Comprehensive policies, and have more 5-star Trustpilot reviews than any other UK travel insurance provider.
If you’re one of the 22 million people in the UK aged 50 plus, you’ve likely seen and done a lot - but with half a century of adventures under your belt, you're just getting warmed up.
But as we age, the odds of a medical hiccup, flight delay or family emergency grow, and standard policies might trim benefits or add steep excesses once you hit the big 5-0.
Our specialist over 50s travel insurance can help protect you financially and practically should your well-earned plans take a turn, whether that’s refunding the cost of a cancelled trip or paying for hospital fees abroad. It includes cover for up to £15,000 cancellation, £5,000 baggage, unlimited medical expenses, and more.** For you, that means fewer what-ifs and more why-nots.
Do I need over 50s travel insurance if I have a GHIC?
What our expert says…
“A GHIC or EHIC can be helpful, but they don’t do the same job as travel insurance – and they were never designed to. These cards give you access to state healthcare in some European countries. That might mean reduced-cost treatment in a public hospital, or access to emergency care without needing to pay upfront. But they don’t cover everything. They won’t help get you home after a medical emergency, or lend support if you’re travelling with health conditions. And they won’t step in if your trip is cancelled, your luggage is lost, or your passport goes missing. That’s why many travellers still choose to have both.
”

What does holiday insurance for over 50s cover?
What’s covered?
emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.
cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.
Example: Two days before setting off on a solo trip to see the Great Barrier Reef, you develop an itch that only your GP can scratch. You're diagnosed with shingles and can't travel. Because you bought your cover right after booking your trip, we'll be able to refund your prebooked tickets, hotels, and activities up to your policy limit.
What isn’t covered?
cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.
missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike*** severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.
undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.
unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.
activities not listed on your policy – like extreme sports or cruises, unless you’ve added them.
travelling against advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.
incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.
going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.
travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.
Example: You leave your favourite handbag on a Parisian bistro table while nipping to the loo. Your return to find it gone. Because you didn't keep it safe by bringing it with you or locking it away, we won't be able to cover the loss.

How to buy over 50s travel insurance
Whether you prefer completing a quick online quote or speaking to someone over the phone, we make buying travel insurance seamless.
1. Run us through your travel plans
To get started on your quote, we’ll go over your travel plans. We need to know who’s coming along, where you’re heading, how long your trip will be, and whether you need insurance for a single trip or annual multi-trip cover.
Top tip: for cruises, it’s important to include every destination on your itinerary, as well as any flights to and from your port.
2. Tell us about your medical history
Next on the list, we’ll go over some health questions with you so we can make sure you get the best medical cover while travelling. Now is the time to tell us about any health concerns that needed medication, medical advice, or treatment during the last two years.
3. Get your personalised quote
Once we have everything we need, we’ll give you your personalised quote, either online or by reading it out loud over the phone.
You’ll be able to choose your level of cover and add any optional extras that suit your trip, such as cruise travel insurance or winter sports cover. If you’d like more time to think it over, we can also send your quote by email so you can go through it in your own time.
Many experts agree that buying travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday is the best way to go. By doing this, you’ll be covered during the run-up to your holiday and while you’re abroad.
Despite the benefits of buying early, lots of people leave it to the last minute. Our sales data from July 2025 to January 2026 shows that the majority of travellers purchased their policy within 30 days of leaving, with a significant proportion doing so within just a few days of departure.
Travel insurance can’t be backdated, so it’s best to get it locked in before you are on holiday. If you still have to get your policy in place for future travels, it’s not too late. Simply get in touch with our friendly team to get a quote.
How much is travel insurance for over 50s?
The cost of your over 50s holiday insurance is driven by a few things, not just age. In fact, in your 50s, you won’t usually see a big jump in price because of your birthday.
A higher quote is more likely to be caused by things like complex pre-existing medical conditions or a trip to a destination where healthcare is more expensive, like the USA.
For an accurate price based on your trip and personal circumstances, it’s best to get a quote with us. You can do this online or over the phone.
Want to shrink the costs of your travel insurance while still getting the most out of your policy? Keep these tips and tricks in mind before you buy:
buy your policy early – taking out travel insurance soon after booking your trip can keep you covered if you need to cancel before you travel.
choose a higher excess – a higher excess will help to lower your premium, but be sure to choose an amount you’re comfortable paying if needed.
skip the add-ons – by not adding things like cruise or gadget cover if you don’t need them, you can lower your overall cover cost.
declare your medical conditions – being open about your health history helps to ensure the right cover is in place and makes sure all your claims sail through.
combine travellers on one policy – make sure all your travel companions are on the same policy, such as our family travel insurance, to save on cover costs.
keep your baggage light – by taking only what you need, you can lower the baggage limit on your policy and bring your premium down.
find a discount – make sure you swing by our discounts page before you buy so you can save on your policy.
The big-ticket costs travel insurance can help with
From October 2024 to October 2025, emergency medical expenses were our most common claim, and for good reason. Hospitalisation for a stomach bug in the USA with medical repatriation back to the UK could set you back £150,000+, according to the UK government.
In reality, the biggest claims are often more costly. While the average emergency medical claim on our worldwide policies was about £3000, the highest we paid was closer to an eye-watering £350,000.^
Over the same period, our second most common claim on worldwide policies was cancellation. If you need to pull the plug on your holiday, we can help you recover the prepaid costs – with the average cancellation claim on our worldwide policies coming in at around £2000, and the highest reaching more than £50,000.

MAUREEN RAVEN,
I will definitely use staysure in future.
My sister recommended Staysure after I found it difficult getting medical insurance, first time this has happened, due to the fact I am waiting a medical appointment - two other insurance companies I used online refused. Although a bit more expensive it was worth it, as always so important to be completely honest when filling out travel insurance.

Travel tips for adventurous 50-somethings
They say life begins after 50. We surveyed over 2,000 people to find out if that’s true – here are some of the best travel tips we took away. We asked over 2,000 people to share their top travel tips – here are some of the best ideas for making the most of every trip after 50.
Choose your own comfort zone
Do you have to travel differently after 50? That depends entirely on you.
Our survey found that around half of respondents preferred familiar, relaxing trips, while others were keen to try new experiences and destinations.
There’s no right or wrong way to travel – whether you’re looking for new adventures or simply enjoying the trips you already love, it’s all about making the most of your time away.
There’s no age limit to adventure
2 in 3 people agreed you’re only as old as you feel.
Our survey found that nearly half of over 50s don’t see age as a barrier when it comes to winter sports like skiing.
And it’s not just skiing – active holidays remain popular for many over 50s, from hiking and biking to golf getaways.
Plan, plan and plan some more
A little extra planning can help keep your travel itinerary running smoothly.
Some top tips for organised travellers over 50 include:
Tailor your travel insurance to cover all aspects of your trip, including declaring all pre-existing medical conditions.
Download or print off your policy and contact details for your travel insurance validation certificate to have to hand while you’re away.
Print off luggage labels to attach to your suitcase to avoid mix ups when checking in to the airport.
Research your destination, transport options and the best payment method before you arrive.
Bring your GHIC or EHIC if you’re heading to Europe – but remember, it does not replace travel insurance.
Check if your location is covered by data roaming by your mobile network provider, or if you’ll need to find another way to access the internet while you’re out and about.

Other travellers over 50 ask..
Travel habits can change over time – you might find yourself wanting to go further, take longer trips, or finally book that cruise you’ve had in mind. Whatever your plans, it’s important to make sure you have the right cover in place, especially if you’re managing a medical condition.
That might mean:
being able to declare medical conditions clearly, with support if you need to make a claim
having strong cancellation cover if your plans change unexpectedly
medical protection that goes beyond the basics, especially for long-haul trips
baggage or gadget cover that reflects what you travel with now
options to tailor your policy with extras like cruise, golf, or winter sports cover
There’s no single ‘best’ policy for everyone – but the right one should feel made for you. It should give you the freedom to travel how you want, knowing that if something goes wrong, you’re not dealing with it alone.
Travel insurance isn’t mandatory for every destination, but it’s used by many, especially those heading outside the UK. Some countries, including those in the EU and long-haul destinations like the USA, may even require proof of insurance for entry or to access certain types of medical care.
For many travellers, holidays can mean going further, staying longer or packing more into each trip.
Whether you're booking a cruise, flying to see family, or taking a city break with friends, having the right cover in place means you’re protected from costs you might not expect.
A good policy can help with:
cancelling or cutting your holiday short
medical care abroad, including hospital stays and emergency treatment
travel delays, missed connections, and other disruptions
replacing lost baggage, personal items, or travel documents
covering stolen cash or valuables
Some of these things might feel unlikely, but they’re the exact situations travel insurance is designed to cover. And taking out your policy as soon as you book means you’re protected from the very start.
We offer two types of travel insurance for people over 50, depending on how often you plan to travel:
Single trip cover – if you’re only planning one holiday, single-trip cover might be more cost-effective than annual cover.
Annual multi-trip cover – if you're taking more than one trip in the next 12 months. You’ll be covered for multiple holidays, up to a set number of days per trip.
Both options include access to our full range of cover. This can include protection for pre-existing medical conditions, depending on what you tell us during your quote.
Once you’ve chosen the type of policy, you’ll also be able to do the following:
Select your destination – this affects what your policy includes and how much it costs.
Choose your level of cover – all policies come with medical cover, cancellation protection and baggage cover as standard, but you can pick the level that suits your plans:
Basic – cover generally suitable for shorter trips with fewer valuables.
Comprehensive – a more generous level of protection.
Signature – our highest cover, with no excess to pay and the most extensive limits.
Add optional extras – these help tailor your policy to the type of trip you’re taking. You might want:
gadgets – protect your mobile, tablet, camera and other devices while you travel
winter sports – cover for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities (included with Signature and Comprehensive annual multi-trip policies as standard)
golf holidays – protection for your golf equipment, green fees and more
cruise holidays – cruise-specific cover including cabin confinement and itinerary changes
excess waiver – reduce your out-of-pocket costs if you need to make a claim
travel disruption – cover for cancelled trips caused by unexpected events, like natural disasters, a food poisoning outbreak at your hotel, a terrorist event, war or conflict.
Many travel insurance providers set an upper age limit – often around 70 or 75 – which can make finding the right policy harder as you get older. At Staysure, we do things differently.
We offer travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions and all ages. In fact, we specialise in travel insurance for seniors.
You can explore our age-specific travel insurance pages here:
Menopause is a natural stage of life, but depending on how it's being managed, it may need to be declared on your travel insurance.
You don’t need to tell us if you’re going through menopause and haven’t had any medical intervention. But if you’ve had symptoms, treatment, or medical advice in the last two years, you’ll need to include this when you get a quote. That includes:
hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
ongoing or past symptoms, such as hot flushes, anxiety, or insomnia
GP or specialist appointments
tests, investigations, or referrals related to menopause
Just let us know during our simple medical screening when you get a quote. If we know about it, we can help you if you need to make a claim.
If you’re fitting in a few rounds on holiday or heading off for a golf-focused break, our golf cover add-on can help. It protects your equipment for up to £5,000, covers hire costs if your clubs go missing, and even reimburses prepaid green fees if illness or bad weather stops play.
We’ll also pay £300 if you score a hole in one on a recognised course^^ – just in case this is the trip it happens.
Cruising’s an exciting way to travel – but standard insurance might not cover everything that could go wrong at sea. Our Cruise Plus add-on is built for cruise holidays, with protection for missed ports, itinerary changes, cabin confinement and more.
Our Cruise Plus add-on could be just the ticket if you're looking to cover:
missed port departures – a cruise is the only holiday where your bedroom is always moving, so it’s important you have insurance that covers this.
cabin confinement – if you’re advised to stay in your cabin due to illness, we’ll pay up to £75 for every full 24 hours you are confined, up to a total of £1000.
unused excursions due to cabin confinement – if you’ve booked and paid for an excursion but can’t attend because you’re confined to your cabin, you won’t lose out.
changes to your itinerary – if your cruise schedule changes and you miss planned stops, you can be compensated for the disruption.
cruise interruptions – if your trip is disrupted and you need to leave early, we might be able to help with additional costs.
If you’re taking the kids or grandkids on holiday, you don’t need to take out insurance with lots of different providers.
If you’re travelling as a traditional family unit (1 or 2 parents with children) our family travel insurance can cover you all under one policy. Children need to be under 18, or under 21 if in full-time education.
If your group is a little bigger – think grandparents, siblings, or friends travelling together – our group travel insurance is likely the best fit. You can cover up to 9 people online, or up to 30 when you call us. You don’t all need to live at the same address.
Whether you choose family or group cover, you’ll all be covered under one policy, which keeps things simple. And if one person needs to cancel or cut short their trip due to a medical emergency, the rest of your group can be covered too.
We’re often able to include a wide range of conditions. In fact, up to 97% of people who tell us about their medical history are offered a policy.
During the medical screening process you’ll need to let us know if you’ve had any of the following in the past two years, relating to your medical condition:
Symptoms
Treatment/medication
Investigation
Medical appointments
Follow-ups
Check-ups
Surgery
If you don’t declare a condition, we won’t be able to cover you for any claims related to it. Being open and accurate during your screening means your policy will be able to support you when you need it most.
You can take out holiday insurance on behalf of another person, whether that’s a parent, a child, a companion or someone you care for.
There are a few things worth keeping in mind when you do this, however, the most important of which is consent. The person being insured needs to know a policy is being taken out in their name.
The policy also needs to be accurate. For example, if you’re buying on behalf of an elderly parent, it’s important you know their full medical history, their current medications and any recent diagnoses, symptoms, and appointments. Getting those details wrong, even with the best of intentions, could affect the validity of their cover.
For that reason, the best way to get travel insurance on behalf of someone is to do it with them. Our friendly team will help you through the process.
Travelling solo is more popular than ever. With 1 in 6 people having taken a holiday by themselves, it’s not just gap-year backpackers going it alone. More people in and around their 50s and beyond are choosing to travel on their own terms – in fact, the average age of a solo traveller is 47.
Our over 50s travel insurance can cover solo trips and backpacking as long as you name all of your destinations when taking out your policy.
