What does over 70s travel insurance cover?
The best travel plans still need a back-up. That’s where your insurance comes in. Our over 70s policies include all the core benefits of our award-winning cover.
You’re covered for:
✓emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
✓getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
✓cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel or experience a bereavement.
✓cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
✓lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
✓pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.
Example: You break your leg on a guided tour and can’t fly home. We’ll arrange a medical repatriation flight with an escort if needed.
For more information, see our guide on what travel insurance includes. Always check your policy document so you know exactly what you’re covered for.
You’re not covered for:
✗cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.
✗missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike**, severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.
✗undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.
✗unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.
✗activities not listed on your policy – like winter sports† or cruises, unless you’ve added them.
✗travelling against FCDO advice – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.
✗incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.
✗going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.
✗trips taken for business or work – your policy is for leisure trips only.
✗travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.
Example: If the FCDO advises against all travel to a destination and you go anyway, your policy won’t be valid.
We can often include long-term conditions and recent diagnoses in your over 70s policy. Just make sure they’re declared when you get your quote.
We’ll ask a few straightforward questions about your medical history. This includes any treatment, tests, medication, or hospital visits in the last two years. We’ll also ask if you’ve ever had a heart condition or circulation problem, even if it was years ago.
Telling us about your health helps us build a policy that works for you, so you’re properly protected if something unexpected happens on your trip.
Scenarios we regularly cover
We regularly cover conditions that are more common in later life, including:
If your condition isn’t listed here, don’t worry – we might still be able to help. Take a look at our medical travel insurance page to see if it’s listed there, or speak to a member of our friendly team today.

What our expert says…
“As we get older, though, the chances of needing medical care while away may increase, so having good travel insurance lets you make the most of your travels. And of course, be sure to speak to your doctor first if you’re travelling with medical conditions.

How much is travel insurance for over 70s?
We don’t base costs on age alone. What really matters is how likely it is that you’ll need support while you’re away – like medical care, cancellation cover, or help getting home early. The more complex or high-risk your trip and health needs are, the more your policy may cost. But it also means you’re getting the cover that actually fits.
We know that price matters – especially when you’re travelling more often, or dealing with medical conditions.
What our expert says…
“Travel insurance does tend to cost more in your 70s, but that’s not because it’s a ‘senior’ product. It’s because insurers look at risk – and older travellers are more likely to make a claim. The good news is, those claims are exactly what you’re covered for.
Hospital stays, emergency care, or getting you home safely after a fall – these are the kinds of costs that can run into thousands of pounds. So, while the policy might cost more now than it did 10 years ago, it’s there to protect your savings if something goes wrong.
”
What destinations does over 70s holiday insurance cover?
Our over 70s travel insurance can cover most destinations. If you’re choosing an annual multi-trip policy, you’ll just need to pick the right region when you get a quote. For single trip policies, simply tell us which countries you’re visiting.
Whether it’s a classic weekend city break or a bigger trip you’ve been planning for years, we’ll help you find the right cover.
You can make changes to your policy, online and in your own time with My Staysure.
It’s quick and easy to make changes to your policy online. If you need to make simple changes such as updating traveller details or renewing a policy that’s details are staying the same, just visit your My Staysure account.
Tips for over 70s travel
With the right preparation, travel in your 70s can still be smooth, safe, and every bit as rewarding.
Before you book your trip
When you’re window shopping for your next holiday, there are a few things to check before you put deposits down.
Check the latest travel advice from official sources, including public health updates. Gov.uk and fit for travel NHS both provide guidance.
Speak to your GP or travel nurse. Ask if you’re fit to travel, whether you need vaccinations, and what to do about any recent treatment or test results.
Be sure to call ahead to your hotel and transport providers to check for any accessibility needs, even if you’re on an inclusive holiday or guided tour.
Getting ready to travel
If you’re in the majority of over 70s who take at least one medicine, then give yourself plenty of time to order your prescriptions before you trip. Remember, you’ll need to bring extra just in case.
Carry key documents. Print or download your travel insurance validation certificate and contact details so they’re easy to access while you’re away.
Label your luggage and essentials. Add your name and contact number to bags andmedication.
Check if your location is covered by data roaming by your mobile network provider, or if you’ll need to find another way to access the internet while you’re out and about.
Bring your GHIC or EHIC card. This gives access to state healthcare in EU countries, but it’s not a substitute for travel insurance.
Staying well abroad
Bring any medication in your carry-on luggage so it can’t be lost by the airline and is on-hand in case you need it while flying.
Keep moving during journeys, including stretching and getting up to move regularly – this can reduce your risk of blood clots.
Don’t try to squeeze too much into one day – space out your activities throughout your trip and plan for plenty of breaks.
Eat and drink with care. Stay hydrated, especially in hot climates or at sea. Light meals can help prevent fatigue or dizziness.
If you’re unsure an activity you want to do is suitable for you, like a hike or guided tour, talk to your GP or nurse in advance.
Common questions for travellers in their 70s
Travel insurance helps cover the cost if something goes wrong while you’re away. You pay a set price, and in return, your policy can protect you from unexpected costs. These costs might include needing treatment abroad, cancelling your trip, or losing your bags. If something covered by your policy happens, your insurer steps in to help.
For over 70s, the product works in the same way as it does for any age. What changes is how it's tailored. You’ll often need to declare any medical conditions, choose a level of cover that suits your plans, and decide if you’d like to add extras like cruise or winter sports protection †.
We offer two types of travel insurance for people over 70, depending on how often you plan to travel:
Single trip cover – if you’re only planning one holiday, single-trip cover might be more cost-effective than annual cover.
Annual multi-trip cover – if you're taking more than one trip in the next 12 months. You’ll be covered for multiple holidays, up to a set number of days per trip.
Both options include access to our full range of cover. This can include protection for pre-existing medical conditions, depending on what you tell us during your quote.
Once you’ve chosen the type of policy, you’ll also be able to:
Select your destination – this affects what your policy includes and how much it costs.
Choose your level of cover – all policies come with medical cover, cancellation protection and baggage cover as standard, but you can pick the level that suits your plans:
Basic – essential cover generally, suitable for shorter trips with fewer valuables.
Comprehensive – a more generous level of protection.
Signature – our highest cover, with no excess to pay and the most extensive limits.
Add optional extras – these help tailor your policy to the type of trip you’re taking. You might want:
Cruise Plus cover – for itinerary changes, onboard medical care, and cabin confinement.
golf cover – to protect your equipment and prepaid green fees.
gadget cover – for phones, tablets and other valuables.
travel disruption cover – for extra protection if your plans are affected by events like strike** or bad weather.
We’re often able to include a wide range of conditions that are more common later in life. In fact, up to 97% of people who tell us about their medical history are offered a policy.
You can browse for your condition here, or simply start a quote. Even if your condition isn’t listed, we might still be able to help.
When you get a quote, we’ll ask a few straightforward questions to understand your health. You can complete the screening online or over the phone – whichever feels easier. It’s not a test or a judgment – just a way to make sure your policy reflects your needs.
A pre-existing medical condition is any illness or diagnosis you’ve had treatment, medication, symptoms or appointments for in the last two years. We’ll also ask if you’ve ever had heart problems, circulation issues or other long-term concerns, even if they were years ago.
Being open about your health means your policy can do its job properly.

Many travel insurers set an upper age limit – often around 70 or 75 – which can make finding the right policy harder as you get older. At Staysure, we do things differently.
We don’t put an upper age limit on our policies. In fact, we specialise in travel insurance for seniors.
You can explore our age-specific travel insurance pages here:
Many bank travel insurance policies include age limits or restrictions around pre-existing medical conditions. That means you could be travelling without proper protection and not realise it, especially if you haven’t read the small print.
Our Don’t Bank On It Report found that 3.3 million UK holidaymakers over 50 may be travelling with inadequate insurance, often because they’re relying on complimentary cover from their bank. One in four adults said they chose bank insurance because it was free, but those who relied on it were more likely to have a claim rejected.
That’s where specialist insurers like us come in. At Staysure, we don’t set upper age limits, and we can often include cover for many common conditions in later life – like high blood pressure, diabetes or a history of stroke – if you tell us about them when you get a quote.
If you’re not sure what your bank policy includes, or whether it’s enough for your trip, it could be a good idea to speak to a specialist.
With our Comprehensive and Signature policies, if you lose your medication, we’ll be able to help you find replacements, so you don’t have to worry about any mishaps.
Please note, while we can help you find replacements, the cost to replace them is not covered.
Travel insurance tends to cost more in your 70s and beyond – mostly because the chances of needing medical treatment or cancelling a trip due to health reasons are higher. Insurers assess risk when setting prices, which means your age and any medical conditions can affect the quote you’re given.
That said, a higher price often reflects stronger cover – like higher medical limits, more support if your plans change, or the ability to include pre-existing conditions – which can be worth more than lower-cost options.
If you’re looking to keep costs down, there are a few things that could help. Choosing single-trip cover instead of annual multi-trip might be more cost-effective if you’re only planning one holiday. Focusing on the essentials, rather than optional extras, can also help you get the right policy for the right price.
What matters most is choosing a policy that fits your plans and your health – not just the cheapest one available.
A GHIC or EHIC can be helpful, but they don’t do the same job as travel insurance – and they were never designed to.
These cards give you access to state healthcare in some European countries, usually on the same terms as residents. That might mean reduced-cost treatment in a public hospital, or access to emergency care without needing to pay up front.
But they don’t cover everything. They won’t help with getting you home after a medical emergency or support if you’re travelling with health conditions. And they won’t step in if your trip is cancelled, your luggage is lost, or your passport goes missing.
That’s why many travellers still choose to have both – using their GHIC or EHIC for basic medical access, and travel insurance for the rest. Together, they give you much more complete protection, especially if your trip doesn’t go to plan.
If you still have an EHIC, you can continue to use it until the expiry date. After that, you’ll need to apply for a GHIC through the NHS or Gov.uk.
There’s no single ‘best’ policy for everyone – but the right one should feel like it’s made for you, not just someone your age.
This often means finding a policy that allows you to declare any health conditions clearly, with support if you need it. Many senior travellers live with long-term conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. The right insurance gives you the chance to have these included, so you’re properly protected if they affect your trip.
It also helps to know what else is built in. Medical cover should go well beyond the basics, not just hospital bills, but things like ambulance transport, staying longer if you're too unwell to travel, or getting you home safely with medical support. You might also want cover for cancelling your trip if your health changes before you go.
Some policies include generous baggage limits or options to remove the excess, whilst others offer extras like cruise cover. The important thing is knowing how the policy works with your situation, not just your destination.
Many people choose to buy travel insurance as soon as they’ve booked their holiday – and for good reason. It means you’re protected for cancellations and changes in health before you travel, not just while you’re away.
For single-trip travel insurance, it could be a good idea to buy your policy once your travel dates are confirmed. If you’re booking something further in advance – like a cruise – you can take out cover up to 18 months ahead, and add cruise protection at the same time.
For annual multi-trip insurance, your cancellation cover starts from the policy start date. So if you’re planning a few holidays in the year ahead, starting your policy early means you’ll be covered for anything that comes up in the run-up to each trip.
A few things to keep in mind:
Your policy needs to start before you leave the UK.
You won’t be able to buy or activate cover once you’ve already departed.
If your health changes after booking, you’ll need to tell us before you travel.
