What does over 65s travel insurance cover?

You’re covered for:

  • Emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.
  • Getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.
  • Cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.
  • Cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.
  • Pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.
  •

Example: You’ve planned a big family trip to Greece. A few days before departure, you develop a sudden health issue and need to cancel. If it’s something covered by your policy, we’ll help recover the costs so you’re not left out of pocket.

For more information, see our guide on what travel insurance includes. Always check your policy document so you know exactly what you’re covered for.

You’re not covered for:

  • cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.
  • missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike†, severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.
  • undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.
  • unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.
  • activities not listed on your policy – like extreme sports‡ or cruises, unless you’ve added them.
  • travelling against advice of the foreign, commonwealth and development office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.
  • incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.
  • going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.
  • trips taken for business or work – your policy is for leisure trips only.
  • travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.

Example: You’re taking medication for a heart condition but didn’t declare it when buying your policy. If you later need treatment related to that condition while you’re away, your claim may not be covered.

    Travelling with medical conditions?

Many travellers over 65 are managing one or more conditions, from kidney problems to cancer.

Since 2004, we’ve helped millions of travellers get cover that reflects both their health and their holiday. If you’ve had a recent diagnosis or been managing a medical condition for a while, we can often include it in your policy, as long as it’s declared when you get a quote.

We’ll ask a few clear questions about your medical history, like any treatment, tests, medication or hospital visits in the last two years. We’ll also check for things like a history of heart or circulation problems, even if they were years ago.

These details help us understand the kind of support you might need. If something changes while you’re away, your policy is built to respond.

    Scenarios we regularly cover

We specialise in travel insurance for people with medical conditions. It’s something we’ve built our cover around – offering support, subject to screening, for a wide range of health needs.

    • cancer – including if you’re in remission

If your condition isn’t listed here, we may still be able to help. You can browse more medical conditions on our website or speak to our friendly team for support.

    Routine doesn’t always mean risk-free

    What our expert says…
“Many travellers think there’s no need to mention a condition if it feels routine or hasn’t caused problems for a while. But even long-managed issues like high blood pressure, diabetes or arthritis can still cause difficulties away from home. Declaring them upfront means your policy can step in if they flare up, rather than leaving you to face the costs alone.  ”

How to get travel insurance for over 65s with Staysure

To buy travel insurance with Staysure, you’ll start by getting a quote.  We’ll ask about your trip and your health, so the cover we offer is accurate and shaped around the kind of support you might need while you’re away.

    1. Tell us about your trip

Start your quote online or give us a call, whichever suits you. Our form is quick, clear and easy to pause and return to.

We’ll ask a few questions to get started, like:

    • where you’re going
    • how long you’ll be away
    • whether you’re looking to cover one holiday or a few trips this year

    2. Let us know about your health

Next, we’ll ask a few health questions so we can understand what support you might need from your policy.

    We’ll ask about:

    • any conditions you’ve had treatment, medication or medical advice for in the last two years
    • any appointments, investigations or hospital stays
    • any upcoming tests or procedures
    • any history of heart or circulation problems – even if they were years ago

    3. Get your quote

Once we’ve got the details we need, we’ll show you your personalised quote online – or read it out to you over the phone if you’ve called.

You’ll have the option to choose your level of cover and add any extras you might need, like cruise cover or protection for your tech and gadgets. Not ready to book straight away? Your quote can be emailed to you, so you can return to it when you’re ready.

How much is travel insurance for over 65s?

In your mid to late 60s, travel insurance can still be good value – particularly if you're in good health.

How much your policy costs depends on a few things – like where you're going, how long you're away, your health, and the level of cover you choose. You can get your personalised quote in minutes, online or over the phone.

Looking for cheaper travel insurance for over 65s?

    What our expert says…
“There are a few simple ways to keep travel insurance affordable in your mid to late 60s.    Choosing a European destination is one. Premiums are often lower, as medical costs tend to be more manageable than in places like the US or Caribbean. You could also increase your excess – just make sure you’re happy with the amount you’d need to pay if you claimed.    And if you’re packing light, think about whether a lower level of baggage cover might suit you. Less to carry could mean less to cover.  ”

What destinations does over 65s holiday insurance cover?

Whether you're planning a longer escape or revisiting a favourite spot closer to home, sorting cover is simple.

If you’re choosing an annual multi-trip policy, you’ll just need to pick the right region when you get a quote. For single trip policies, simply tell us which countries you’re visiting.

    Tips for over 65s travel

Travel might look a little different in your mid to late 60s. A bit of extra planning can help everything run smoothly.

    Before you book your trip

    • Choose a destination that works for you
Thinking about what you’ll enjoy most, and what might make things easier while you're away, can help you pick a location that fits your style of travel.

    • Get official travel advice
Check the FCDO and NHS Fit for Travel websites for country-specific health information, entry requirements, and any alerts for the country you plan to visit.

    • Consider your accommodation
If things like stairs, steep driveways or long walks to amenities could affect your stay, look into options with, for example, lift access or local transport links nearby.

    • Match your travel plans and your policy
With our annual multi-trip policies, you’re covered for multiple holidays in a year – up to 50 days per trip (or 35 days if you’re 71 or over), with a maximum of 183 days abroad in total. If you’re planning a longer stay, our single trip options can often cover up to 104 days.

    • Add cover for cruises, golf or other activities
Planning a cruise or golf break? Consider adding optional extras when you get your quote, so your policy reflects the holiday you’ve got in mind.

    Getting ready to travel

A bit of preparation now can make things simpler while you're away – and help avoid those last-minute scrambles the night before your flight.

    • Sort your medication early
Order any prescriptions at least two weeks before your trip. Bring enough for the full stay, plus a few extra days in case of delays. If you're travelling with anything restricted, keep it in its original packaging along with a GP letter or repeat slip.

    • Organise your documents
Print or download your travel insurance validation certificate, emergency contacts and booking confirmations, especially if you’re travelling without data or relying on your phone.

    • Label anything important
Add your name and number to luggage tags, medication boxes – anything you wouldn’t want to lose or misplace.

    • Check your tech and payments
Make sure your phone will work abroad or download offline maps if needed. Let your bank know you’ll be using your card in a different country to avoid it being flagged.

    • Make sure your passport is valid
Some countries require at least six months' validity from your return date. If you haven’t travelled in a while, it’s worth checking well in advance.

    • Give someone your itinerary
Whether it’s a friend, family member or neighbour, it helps to leave your travel plans and emergency contact details with someone at home.

    Staying well on holiday

A few small habits can help you get more from your holiday – especially if your trip includes multiple stops, warmer climates, or a mix of activities and downtime.

    • Keep essentials in your hand luggage
Bring your medication, travel documents and anything you'd find difficult to replace. That way, even if your bags are delayed, you’ll still have what you need.

    • Stay hydrated and pace your days
Whether you're touring a city, relaxing on board, or exploring a new region, it helps to carry water and take regular breaks – especially on warmer days or longer excursions.

    • Ask for help if something changes
If you feel unwell or something unexpected happens – like new pain or dizziness – don’t hesitate to ask for support. That might mean speaking to hotel staff, a guide, or using our 24/7 medical helpline.
