What is travel insurance medical screening?

Travel insurance medical screening is a set of simple questions about your health that will help your insurer determine the severity of any condition when you’re buying travel insurance to ensure you get the right level of cover. With Staysure, this can be completed over the phone or online in a matter of minutes.

Why is declaring my conditions important?

Most travel insurance policies include some form of emergency medical expenses and repatriation cover however this will not cover existing medical conditions unless they have been declared and agreed with your insurer.

Hospital and repatriation costs can be significant should you become ill or suffer an injury on holiday as a result of a previously diagnosed condition that has not been declared, you could be left facing a weighty bill.

What sort of questions will I be asked in the screening?

The kind of questions you will be asked during the screening process will depend on the nature of your medical condition, it’s likely that you’ll be asked the following:

  • When you were first diagnosed
  • The number of medications you take
  • If you’ve had any operations
  • If you’ve been admitted to hospital
  • Whether or not you have any related conditions.

To make answering the questions as quick and simple as possible, it’s useful to have general information and dates noted down in advance.

Confidentiality – Professional medical travel insurance specialists, such as those at Staysure, understand the personal nature of the questions being asked and you can rest assured that any details will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

A pre-existing condition is any type of medical condition that has existed before you purchase your policy. Insurers will also want to know about any condition for which you take prescribed medication as well as any heart, circulatory, respiratory, stroke or cancerous condition that has ever been diagnosed. It is also vital that you update your insurer with any new diagnosed condition after you have purchased your policy.

What if I don’t have any pre-existing medical conditions?

If you do not have an existing condition you will not have to go through the screening process. It is important however to declare every condition, no matter how minor you believe it to be – insurers must consider your overall health no matter how minor your ailment may be in order to provide the right level of cover.

If you declare everything and the screening process determines that you don’t have any relevant pre-existing conditions, then it will have no effect on the pricing of your policy or coverage offered.

Do I have to declare all of my conditions?

Yes – while you may be tempted to bring down the cost of your policy by only declaring only the conditions you want covered, it is simply not worthwhile as this could void your policy.

All medical conditions, past and present, must be declared so that the insurer can accurately assess your health and provide you with an appropriate policy where possible.

How will my declared medical condition(s) affect my travel insurance premium?

An additional premium may be required depending on the severity of your condition(s). Insurers will base its calculations for any extra cost on whether there is an increased risk of you requiring medical treatment and/or repatriation while you’re travelling, or cancelling your holiday due to illness.

What if I’m on a waiting list for surgery or awaiting test results?

Unlike many insurers, Staysure can offer cover for medical and repatriation claims in relation to numerous surgeries and the associated condition if they have been declared when booking your policy†. The full list of surgeries is available here.

Also, while we will be able to provide a more appropriate quote if your medical condition has been fully diagnosed and declared, we can still consider you for cover if you are awaiting test results.
