How do I declare oedema on my travel insurance?

For you to declare oedema on your policy, we’ll first need you to complete our medical screening.

The medical screening isn’t a long-winded, difficult exam. Instead, we’ll ask you a set of multiple choice questions about your oedema and how it affects you personally, so we can understand your medical history and tailor your policy to meet your needs.

It’s vital that the information you provide us with is as thorough and accurate as possible. Failure to disclose important information about your medical history, and any pre-existing medical conditions you may have, will affect the validity of your policy should you need to claim further down the line.

What questions will I be asked about my oedema during the medical screening?

For us to offer you cover, we’ll first need to know your diagnosis.

We can offer cover for the following types of oedema:

  • Angioneurotic oedema
  • Angio-oedema
  • Ankle oedema
  • Bone marrow oedema
  • Hereditary angio-oedema
  • Idiopathic oedema
  • Lipoedema
  • Lymphoedema
  • Macular oedema
  • Myxoedema
  • Peripheral oedema

Of course, everyone’s medical circumstances differ. But the types of questions you can expect when declaring your oedema include:

  • Have you needed hospital treatment for this in the last 2 years?
  • What is (or was) the cause of this condition?
  • Was this condition associated with cancer?
  • When did your symptoms start? (e.g. breathlessness or ankle swelling)

Can you fly with fluid in your lungs?

You should always check with your doctor that you can fly with fluid in your lungs, as it will vary depending on your medical history. In fact, we’ll need to know this before we can offer you cover for your oedema.

It’s always worth speaking with your medical professional as they’ll be able to tailor the advice to your medical history.

It may be useful to let your airline know of your medical situation, particularly your oedema, before you travel.
